The Lutherans apparently hate altos
All of their hymns are pitched so that the majority of the melodic notes are in the alto break.

2. Was this the LBW?
Lutheran Book of Worship (Green book).
Worst. Hymnal. Ever.

6. They need to replace it.
It was innovative at the time, ca. 1975. But there are far too many old German hymntunes, the harmonizations on many of the hymns sucks, and the "inclusive" language is contrived.

Bless them for trying, but really - it's time to let it die a graceful death. (I had several gigs as organist in Lutheran churches, and even had a full-time job in one for 2 years. I used to keep my Methodist hymnal nearby, so I could play the hymns in a singable key, and traditional harmonization.)

13. Hey, I like old German hymns, especially when harmonized by Bach!
But on the whole, one of the best things about being Episcopalian is getting to sing all those Ralph Vaughan Williams hymn arrangements based on English folk songs, not to mention all those English choral pieces, from 16th-century Byrd through 21st-centuryTavener.

16. I like the LBW
i love the old german hymns... i mean, that's our heritage, so i see no problem with it. But we also have WOV (With One Voice) which has a lot of newer/english stuff in it

4. We always had red hymnals.
Is that the Missouri Synod with the green hymnals?

7. Nope - that's ELCA.
But some congregations may have elected to stay with the older red hymnal. They were smart.

8. Okey doke. It's been a while.
:D I'll probably catch flak for this, but I went to a Catholic funeral a while back, and they had the most boring, generic liturgy and hymns imaginable. I'll go hide now.

19. It's true.
I want the full old-style Latin Requiem Mass.

Modern Catholic liturgy is profoundly uninspiring. The English translation is hideously pedestrian - hymnody is fairly new to Catholicism, and hasn't quite been "grasped" properly.

9. I think Missouri Synod also uses the green ones
LCMS churches were predominantly German, IIRC, which might explain the preponderance of old German hymns.

I went to an ELCA college (was an ALC college, until the merger my sophomore year) and I remember those green hymnals all too well.

10. This is the best pic I could find of the LBW.
If I recall correctly, the LCMS was originally involved in the planning and editing of the LBW, and insisted on a large number of old German hymns. But then, right before publishing, they pulled out, and they were stuck with a hymnal that nobody found satisfying.

12. YES, I remember that story!
I remember that was a very big deal to many of my religion profs, because they (the LCMS) literally walked out of one of the final planning meetings for the LBW. In fact, I think one of my profs may have actually been at the meeting.

Thanks for digging that up! :hi:
