Approved art in the Third Reich
There really aren't any words to describe this stuff ("fucking awful" comes to mind) so I encourage you to draw your own conclusions.

Josef Thorak, "Denkmal der Arbeit" (Monument to Work) (wow...no comment)

"Genius des Sieges" (Genius of Victory) by Adolf Wamper, 1940

"Deutsche Waffe" (German Weapon) by Hias Lautenbacher, 1941 (...uh...yeah...no comment)

Oh, there's more...

2. They were really into psuedo-classical nudes.
And apparenty, thinly-veiled homoeroticism...

8. Not into anatomy, unfortunately
Edited on Fri Mar-10-06 04:56 PM by jpgray
The masters could fuck with anatomy and still make it look plausible. Like the Riace bronzes, for example.

21. I'm not all that familiar with Tom's...catalog, shall we say?
But I'm sure you're right...Tom had his men in all sorts of uniforms.

Paul Cadmus had a style similar to Tom of Finland..,but less..pronounced, I guess. :-)

13. It reminds me of WPA-era Modernism. Was the school called Utopianism?
Standard Big Brother art. Reminds me of the look on Fritz Lang's Metropolis.

34. That's because mostl of the good artists skipped town early.
Our artistic community was incredibly enriched in the '30s by all of the German artists that wanted no part of the Nazis. Especially in film and music (think Billy Wilder, Fritz Lang, Marlene Dietrich, and more). I did finally see Triumph of the Will a few days ago though, and it really is a well-done film.

In 1937, Goebbels organized a pair of art exhibits, one showing the kind of crap above (and a bunch of wretched oil paintings) and another showing so-called 'degenerate' art (various flavors of Modernism) The 'degenerate' exhibit was so popular that the Nazis shut it down in embarassment a couple of weeks later.
