8. ESB is an Extra Special (or Extra Strong) Bitter.
It's a specific ale style - more aggressive and more balanced than most ales, both in alcohol and hoppiness, but not overpowering. They're usually malty and a bit "fruity" flavored. Red Hook, for instance, has a very subtle grapefruity "twang" to its flavor.
