And not that pleasant of a person, actually.

53. Actually, she was married once.
It was for a very short time.

"A banner year for Hepburn, 1928 also marked her nuptials to socialite businessman Ludlow ("Luddy") Ogden Smith, whom she had met while attending Bryn Mawr and married after a short engagement. Hepburn and Smith's marriage was rocky from the start — she insisted he change his name to S. Ogden Ludlow so she would not be called Kate Smith.

They were divorced in Mexico in 1934, after having lived apart for some time. Fearing that the Mexican divorce was not legal, Ludlow got a second divorce in the United States in 1942, and a few days later he remarried."

13. Sorry to burst your bubble, CP, but she wasn't all that nice of a person.
I live in the town where she lived. Her rude behavior is kind of legendary around here. She was snotty and pushy and arrogant when whe came into town to shop at Walt's and other stores. Still, for some reason, people in town seem to think her behavior was "cute." Damn if I know why; to me, rude is rude no matter how famous you are.

She ruled the stage whether she portrayed a silly socialite, a hard-nosed reporter, a dedicated missionary or a ruthless, scheming queen. She RULED the stage. My eyes were always on her when she appeared. A genuine icon of American cinema....

She was just flat-out gorgeous. Maybe the only actress I could watch in anything just because of her beauty. It's nice that she happens to be a good actress as well.

(Lots of other beautiful women on this thread as well; I just figured I'd do the uncharacteristic thing (for me at least) and try to pick only one.)

49. I thought the only distinction was being in the twentieth century.
Dr. Curie, I think, had a much sexier mind.

It may interest you to know that Dr. Curie was implicated - unjustly probably - in a sex scandal in her time, involving Dr. Langevin. This was after the death of Pierre in an automobile accident, but Dr. Langevin was a married man. Some people actually tried to get Dr. Curie to decline her second Nobel Prize on the grounds that she was morally corrupt. I don't know if any of this makes her sexier, but it is hard to imagine anything being quite as sexy as the mind of Dr. Curie.

If we limit ourselves to looks, when you see pictures of Dr. Curie as a young woman, she was strikingly beautiful physically as well as mentally, not as sexy as when photographed with all those men, including Albert Einstein, at the Solvay conference, but cute nonetheless.

Of twentieth century babes go, Dr. Curie certainly has something on say, Britney Spears, Grace Kelly and Sophia Loren, although I must admit that I have never seen a picture of Dr. Curie in a low cut dress, nor have I seen a picture of her waving her navel.

Dr. Curie's daughter, Irene Curie-Joliet also something of a hot number, also won the Nobel Prize with her husband making the Curie family the only one with four Nobel laureates, five if you count Marie's two awards twice.

People sometimes refer to radioactivity as being "hot," but the Curie family was filled with hotties in many ways.

72. Huzzah!
Edited on Sun Mar-12-06 11:30 PM by Benfea
Computer languages as we know it today would not exist if not for her. She wrote the first assembler (before then, people literally programmed in ones and zeros), and laid the groundwork for the first third generation languages (her white papers led directly to COBOL, but we won't hold that against her). She is also responsible for coining the term "bug" in reference to computer glitches (in her case, it was an actual moth that died on a circuit board and its decomposing body screwed up the circuits).

Plus, she was the only female rear admiral (equivalent to a 5-star general), and she had not one but two PhDs.

Huzzah!

Mae Jameson is still prettier, though. *swoon*
