Define "Freeper"
In the sense it's supposed to be, not the insult version.

I've a good idea of a Freepers attributes *SO NO NEED TO POST THOSE*

I was just wondering were the phrase comes from, and what it's literal meaning is...

Remember: I am a long way away! (Australia) That's why I don't know.

Nothing more to it than that. If you inhabit Free Republic, you're a Freeper. They even call themselves that.

17. I hate that word
Nature never put her most treasured possessions into a garret four stories high, and so exceeding tall men have ever empty heads.

And their thinking skills make it clear that they
needed help using the stapler.

(props to the writers of "Futurama" for the 'prom dress' line)

30. So far as I have authority, I make thee an honourary cockney
Of course, I'm not one myself either. The strict definition is one who was born within earshot of the Bow bells, that is, the bells of St Mary-le-Bow, Cheapside. The looser definition is any working-class inhabitant of London. In recent years people all over the south have started speaking with a faux-cockney accent, called "estuary english" by some, and "mockney" by others.

I like the latter. :)

31. Speaking the true universal language:
Edited on Sat Mar-11-06 03:48 AM by XemaSab
Irony. :patriot:

Sort of like drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon while slouched down in your orange Naugahyde lounger while watching Pulp Fiction and wearing a shirt that had a past life at a gas station.

On edit: and you're really a computer programmer making $120,000 a year after taxes.

Edited on Sat Mar-11-06 03:51 AM by billyskank

On edit: no computer programmer makes 120 grand. We do useful work. To make that kind of money you have to have a job which is of no use to society whatsoever, i.e. a company director.

34. Nah, no programmer is worth that much
It's a skilled profession, and skilled professions don't command that much money. A programmer at the top of his/her game might get £50K here. I can't imagine even in Silicon Valley it's that much different. Especially now so many jobs are being outsourced to India.

36. That's incredible
I would say at his age he or she was being way overpaid. Programming isn't that hard, not as hard as, say, painting the Sistene Chapel ceiling (and that sort of job pays even worse), and there is no way he or she could have reached the top of their game, unless they are a genius. If they were 52 then that would seem fair, excessive, but fair. 22? No way. That must have during the dot-com madness. Everybody went batshit insane. I bet they were just web designing too, right?

And yes, it was during the dot com madness, but he's a talented lad, so who knows?

I'm so ignorant about it, I couldn't give you specifics. Something about programming packet routers? But that may have been at a different job.

38. Does sound like proper programming then
That is something! But 100K for 22-year-old kid is obscene by any reasonable standard. But those were obscene times. A lot of people got truly fleeced.

39. And other people did the fleecing

It was madness... I had a bunch of friends in the middle of it... I was about the only person in my social circle to graduate high school. Everyone else dropped out and made buckets of cash. I just don't have the aptitude for it. A near total lack of interest, frankly. I can design a basic but good looking website in HTML and that's as far as I'll go. I took a class in Java, but I never got the hang of it.

I know you're all into it, and hey, more power to you! :toast:
