Poll question: "Male" posters turn out female, "female" male, I'm confused
Edited on Mon Mar-13-06 03:54 PM by uppityperson
I forgot the message part here, sorry. I have been on DU for 1 1/2 yrs and it still amazes me that someone I had assumed to be female or male is not. It constantly reminds me to not make these assumptions, but still it happens. Just wondering how you see yourself, how people see you. Thanks.

1. My gender is clearly identified in my user profile.
plus, it's fairly obvious by the context of my posts.

3. I just changed mine to indicate as I've been blasted for being male
Maybe I am just dense, reading along, responding, reading along and all of a sudden someone turns out to be opposite sex than I'd thought. Odd.

23. You're female?
You know, gender undeclared is presumed to be female. I've had several DUers tell me that. They were the ones who bothered to check my profile. Some of the others assume I'm male. It's so confusing.

9. I am rereading Paradoxes of Gender and find this sort of funny
I have always clearly idetified myself as female. Other people also clearly identify their gender by their profile, user name, or make references to their gender in posts. Some DUers do not do any of these things. Over the internet, it is more difficult to determine gender in real life. Why are we uncomfortable though if we cannot determine gender?

15. According to the book it is because gender is so important
In society. She argues that it is the most important class. People treat and judge people on the basis of gender as well as folow their gender script or reject it. She argues that it is created by society though, rather than naturuaul.

17. To some extent
They often interact with gender in various situations. She also ties in sexual orientation to gender. The male-female dichotomy is strongest though, at least according to her. Are you uncomfortable if you do not know the race/ethnicity of the poster or whether she or he is wealthy. middle class, low wage worker or living on government assistance?

18. I find it strange that I even subconciously genderize people.
It is not just what people post, but how they do it, or their icon thingy, or their name. Even gender neutral ones. I find it odd because I try to see people as just people, and this popped up today when someone I thought was male wasn't. I don't check profiles often enough perhaps.

20. Female, BUT I had to talk that up
when I was first new here. The first year I was here, most people assumed I was male from my typing/speaking style. I wasn't aware of that until I got called "sir" and "he" one too many times.

Yep, I've heard it several times when meeting people from DU. I find it kind of funny, actually, since I make a point to sign all my posts as "Laura" and my profile says I'm a female...

It would seem that people see davsand as short for Dave Sand(insert final suffix here) rather than as the meld of my maiden name and married name. I was Davis for 35 years of my life and then I married Kevsand. Does THAT help any???

Oh well, whatta ya gonna do?

of the time Jack's son on "Will & Grace" was explaining to a girl at his first dance why his dad could dance so well.

"I dunno. I guess it's because he's gay."

"Yeah? One of my moms is gay."

26. Oh Lord! Not again!
I'm male but sometimes get mistaken for female. Just ask Wetzillbill - he thought I was a cute girl and started flirting. Broke my heart to tell him I was male and old enough to be his Dad.

I also got into an argument with a guy. It got silly. I eventually told him "Go fuck yourself!" His response? "All you women are the same!" I didn't know whether to laugh or cry......

But I am very much.... (Khash looks inside his boxer-briefs)..... male.

Khash.

49. When I first got online back in 1989
it was an atmosphere where you really strove for ambiguity in your online identity because it was safer that way. So I've managed to retain some of that through the years. However, people who have posted with me over time know I'm female, because I will often answer with my real name, Mary, or discuss some things from a female point of view.

The only thing I really dislike as a result of this is the "enlarge your penis" spam mail, since I ain't got one. :)
