On Boston Legal, the druggie daughter of the old lawyer guy says to him, "Sometimes, it's better to be there than to be sober" when he called on her drug use and the fact that she has a small daughter.

Sorry there, bitchy-poo, but you are wrong. Dead fucking wrong.

I don't think there's any kid who would prefer a parent "being there while drunk or drugged up" to the parent "not being there" at all.

Fuck that. My dad was rarely "there", and thank God for it, because he was rarely sober, and it would have been far, far worse to have him "there" while drunk.

I also loved the "come pick me up at the bar" phone calls, and the occasional calling of the bar (I used to do this to piss him off when I was in high school and hated his fucking guts) to ask him if he was coming home for supper.

3. Agreed. My father in law was "there" when our son was born, and

turned my husband's happy moment into one of great grief. I have to agree with you Rabrrrrrr. Many times he was "there", MrG suffered.
