Who is the moral leader of this country?

Who do people look to for moral guidance. Who do they look to for a moral compass? Some of the possible answers asume the public is so mislead that they look to evil sources.

anyway I am my own moral compass but I do think a large portion of "mainstream" America look up to this man...just sayin' :shrug:

Everything this man says is truthy. Let's not be bothered with facts; it's just important that we feel we're right. ;)

That whole "will it float" thing is awe-inspiring.

I like plenty of the folks in your poll, but I don't look to any of them for moral guidance.

Sad to say but for the vast majority the moral compass for them is Oprah or Dr. Phil or some pseudo-celebrity tv show host. Not a movie star celebrity but someone like Oprah or Dr. Phil.

The majority don't look to any politician for moral guidance (as they shouldn't), but they also don't look to the RW scaremongers.

Maybe more honestly it's split, about half to Oprah and Dr. Phil, a quarter to their priest/reverend/minister, and a quarter to their parents or grandparents or some family member.

Television is killing our society.

Go to any neighborhood in america during the day and there will be people just sitting there watching television, even if it's a beautiful day. A rule in my house is that if the sun is shining, the TV isn't allowed on. If you want to watch something, you can set the DVR and watch it at night, or when it's rainy or something.

Too many people though just go all vacant and watch it constantly, and it's their main companion. Very sad and depressing.

It's not that I think children shouldn't watch TV or play video games, they just don't have to do it 24/7.

It's all about moderation. I watch plenty of television, and enjoy video games. I'm even teaching my daughter how to play Ms. Pac-man. She likes the WA WA WA sound when she dies (she's 16 months old...it's cute).

Anwway generally though it's all about moderation. One of my...well my wife's cousins kids....don't know what that is to me....plays his gameboy or whatever it's called CONSTANTLY. Walks around with it. Sits in the room with it, rides in the car with it. When he's not he's jumping around like a madman from being so stimulated. He practically doesn't sleep, and they let him play it in bed to all hours. Seems very bad to me.

Anyway. If it's dark outside, i'm not as opposed to just watching some TV or playing a game for an hour or two, but it's when it's nice out that it really gets me....That or done without moderation.

outside until the street lights came on and our moms called us into dinner. We lived on a quiet, cul-de-sac in a middle-class, low crime suburban neighborhood.

Then I would eat dinner and my parents helped me with homework. When that was done, yes, I Could watch TV but it was only for a few hours until bedtime.

When I grew up the streets would teem with kids (the 70s and 80s) until dark, and even then the stragglers would be still out there...Nowdays I live in a comparable neighborhood full of kids, you see them waiting for school buses or being driven to school in the morning, etc. See them coming home. It's rare you see them outside playing.

During the summer there was a nice day and for some reason they were all out there playing a massive game of tag all over the neighborhood. There were tons of them about, like it was regularly back in the day. Normally though. They're all inside, other than a random kid here or there. Sort of depressing.

I just forgot to tell you about it.
The Professor

They are the first and the most important source of culture for a developing child. No politician or celebrity can match their influence. They are more powerful than religion, because the parents more or less determine what religion, if any, the child will grow up with. Even if they later switch religions or drop out of religion, it still had a major impact on them. That goes for rejecting parental influence in other ways, too.

Who are their moral leaders? I don't think anyone would dispute that parents are the dominant influence in forming a child's personality including morality.

Either the "let's all help each other" or the "screw you, I got mine" mentality.

So, according to the choices in your poll, it would be either Jimmy Carter or George W. Bush.

There are many different people who look to many different moral leaders for many different issues.
