Eddie Van Halen looked dang good up until about five years ago.

11. More likely that the treatment
and also being a 51 year old rock star did this to him. In any case, it's not funny.

13. In any event,
I don't find it funny. If we're really progressives, don't we see mental health issues on the same level with physical health issues?

Sorry to be a hardass on this. But we're progressives, or we're not, and I think we should be above taking the easy potshot.

And she's had more than her share of stress and tribulkations... (she doesn't look 35, of course -- but she looks good).

21. She's a lovely human bean.
I agree that genetics probably have a lot to do with how good or not-so-good we look at any age. Most of all, though, I like Stevie's humanity, and that's her _own_, pretty much separate from genetics.

25. But do you remember
how SNL used to make fun of her for being "fat"? Good grief, none of us look like we did when we were young, perky, virginal repositories of reproductive hormones. (Thank goodness. I'm glad I finally have some _life_ in my face.) :) :hi:

30. Isn't that sad?
I wouldn't care if she were a 4 or a 14 or a 24. She seems to be a good person, and her personal health is her business, not mine. When I hear that beautiful voice (my favorite is "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You"), I don't know what she looks like. Maybe I'm shallow.

22. Does Eddie Van Halen _owe_ us
a good looking body, just because he's semi-famous? (I don't even particularly like the guy's music, but I can't believe how much pleasure some, not you MrS, seem to get out of him looking so haggard.)

27. You're right, there is no pleasure in this for me
The Van Halens are Dutch-Indonesian, as is my wife

Although we're not related, there is a connection to me.

It's just shocking for me to see a once vibrant life fall so low, so fast

Health issues aside, I'm not feeling a lot of pity for people who gain so much in life and then throw it all away with Meth, alcohol and heroin.

Eddie's example should be instructive.

3. To Fark: It's fun to make fun of cancer survivors, huh?
Eddie Van Halen has survived oral cancer and the hellish load of treatments that often go with surviving. I'm not dissin' you, Texasgal, but the Fark idjit who made that Photoshop is a jerk.

I was just laughing at how creative some of the photoshops were. I would never outwardly make fun of a cancer survivor.

I am so sorry if I offended.

9. Another DUer posted the same photo after Oscar night.
It's nothin' you did, Texasgal. :pals:

I knew he'd had cancer and a rough treatment, but I'd sort of forgotten it until that photo was posted. Then I googled and confirmed. Also, Eddie's 51 years old. Very few of us would look so good at 51, after having beat cancer.

19. Same here.
Although Rush leaves himself open to criticism by kicking the crap out of others for their addictions, while seeking to cloak his own substance abuse problems. If he had his way, all of medical histories _except his_ would be open to public scrutiny.

26. But you do understand....
...that the worst symptom in addiction is denial. The "I don't have a (drinking, drug, gambling, etc.) problem but other people do" is a lie that they tell themselves, they believe it as true and totally believe that when they lie to others it's the truth.
If anything positive has come out of Rush's situation, hopefully he's finally realized the truth and won't have as much disdain for others that suffer from additions.
As far as Noelle, that poor woman is probably also a victim of neglect. So many celebrity and politician's kids have parents that put their careers and their quest for power over their families needs. They put their jobs and greed ahead of their children and I weep for all those children.

28. I agree with you.
Read my post in this thread. I believe true progressive thought lends equal empathy to psychological and physical illnesses. My problem with Rush is that he seems to think he's somehow different from other addicts, and this isn't due to denial alone -- it's also due to elitism.

I generally agree with you about the family issues related to neglect and addiction. For the rest of us, though, economic survival could be substituted for greed in that equation. Our leaders, few of whom have _ever_ lived like us, have created an economic reality where both parents _must_ work full-time and even bring work home with them, leaving little time and energy for our kids' needs. That's a _big_ part of why I've never had children.

31. Very true
In my parents and grandparents generation, one person worked, supported an entire family, paid all the medical bills, drove a decent car and put their kids through college. That my friend, you and I will never see again in our lifetimes. At least as far as the middle and the working-poor class families go.

8. It's amazing what an asshole editor can do
There was no need to pic this picture out of the likely hundreds that were taken of him.

Crappy slumped over half-sideways pose
In the middle of a facial transition

Granted, he could have at least cleaned himself up, washed his hair, and not tried to dress like a 19 year old rocker, but that's his call.
