Fashion Designer Cassini Dies at 92

NEW YORK Mar 18, 2006 (AP)— Oleg Cassini, who designed the dresses that helped make Jacqueline Kennedy the most glamorous first lady in history, died Friday. He was 92.

Cassini died on Long Island, said Senada Ivackovic, marketing director for Oleg Cassini Inc. The cause of death was not immediately known.

Kennedy, only 31 when her husband was elected president, was the pinnacle of style in the White House years from 1961 to 1963. Her simple, geometric dresses in sumptuous fabrics, her pillbox hats and her elegant coiffure were copied by women from 18 to 80.

did much to give us an unforgettable era of elegance. How I miss the days when we could point to the WH with feelings of pride.

2. Cassini loved simple, beautiful lines.

I miss his style. Not that I ever have owned anything like that.

But the fanciest dress I own probably owes a lot to Cassini's influence over me. It was for a very fancy wedding, and I chose the simplest dress I could find.
