Best place to go to create a personal web site?

I thought I could create one through my ISP, but what they offer for free web sites sucks.

I don't mind paying -- if it's reasonable. I don't know the rates.

My site will be about feral cats, TNR, humanity towards strays, etc. I may, in the future, add a paypal account for fundraising. If I ever go 501(c)(3).

Any ideas where I can go to get my own site?

1. It's not free, but I rent space thru

www.yohost.com. The owner (Brett) is an occassional DU poster. The support is top-notch, and the hosting very affordable.

5. YoHost talks about Linux v. Windows.

I don't know from Linux. Isn't it an operating system? Or is it just a browser? If I don't "have it" can I use this Linux for my web site?

I'm so confused...

11. Linux is an Operating System (like Windows or Mac OS)

unless you're running web pages that have server-side programming in them, you really don't have to worry too much about it.

If you're just doing static HTML pages, you should be fine with a Linux plan (which is usually cheaper than the Windows one, IIRC).

As a matter of fact, I believe DU runs on Linux :)

I hope to have my site up in a couple of weeks. I hope to remember to update it, too! Nothing more irritating than going to a site you think is going to be cool and seeing "last updated march 18 2002."

there is no advertising placed on your page, unlike angelfire, which became impossible because of all the banners

you are allowed to put ads, paypal etc. and sell things on your diary or blog

they sell picture hosting but you can just as well host your pictures at photobucket for free

they have templates or if you know html you can just design your own

... account for $5 a month easily, even less if you are willing to pay a year at a time.

Then you can get your own domain (like www.bertakatzenagle.com) for $8 per year.

At that point all you need is to learn a little HTML and maybe some graphics and go to town :)

When you buy your own space, you can make a site the way you want it without banners and restrictions. Most of these hosts will also have mySql, php and other stuff you need to do fancy things like message boards, blogs, etc :)
