Woo-hoo, got a really good job offer

It was be about a $20K raise from what I'm making now, plus offers a 20% bonus (my bonus now is zero). On top of that, since they know I'll have to relocate to another area of Connecticut, they're going to give me $10,000 cash up front (after tax, meaning it will be more, but will be $10,000 after they deduct taxes) The company 401k matches 140% of my contribution, up to 5% of my salary - so, if I put in 5%, the company puts in 7%. Granted, most of the pay increase will be going towards increased housing costs, but not all of it.

Also will have 22 vacation days for a full year, or 15 for the rest of this year if I start before the end up April.

The good thing is that we can relocate to in between where I work & my wife works and she wouldn't have to find a new job (We've also looked outside of CT, and that would mean that if she got a job outside of CT... I would then have to find a job as well - or vice versa.

Sounds almost too good to be true.

That sounds terrific, dude! From your housing costs bit, I assume you're headed south/southwest?

My wife is a bit south of Hartford area..., we were thinking Orange, Woodbridge, Bethany for the schools. Possibly Cheshire, but that may be too far from the Metro North train line. Have to see if Bethany is too rural for our tastes or not, as housing is cheaper there than in Woodbridge & Orange.

She may eventually try to relocate as well.

The company has a shuttle from the Stamford station to their office on the beach overlooking the Sound.

That sounds wonderful... I miss good public transportation!

not sure about the housing prices. I know Woodbridge is fairly affluent as are some parts of Orange.

But, the homes we saw in our price range in Bethany were a lot nicer, bigger & newer there than they were in Orange & Woodbridge.

I lived in the next town over for 20 years.

See my post below where I take a cheap shot at Cheshire. I've had some bad experiences with people from that town. Bad enough to curse that city forever.

I work at a newspaper in CT as a sports reporter and most of my run-ins with Cheshire folk have been through sports. That's where my distaste for Cheshire comes from.

Cheshire is one town we may be looking at (good school system), as well as Bethany/Orange/Woodbridge.

Sorry but I hate Cheshire. Bunch of snobs live in that town.

I think my father said that if you talked to people in Cheshire, they think their town is the center of the universe. (must be a lot of Republicans there...)

Just a little advice on relocating. I lived in Norwalk and Danbury (also Watertown) for many years and the commute to Stamford can be absolute hell from any of those. I would suggest taking the Metro North if possible. Norwalk and Danbury are probably the most affordable in that area and have decent schools. Its been 15 years since I left Watertown, but they also have decent schools!

Two folks I knew from my UConn days are now teachers in the Watertown system. Odd couple who have been together forever (started dating in high school in the mid 80s!) - she's an olivy skinned Italian woman & a liberal Democrat (or was), while he was a tall blonde German type and a conservative Republican (or was)

That's quite the unbelievable offer. Lots of people in the country are working 2 jobs to make ends meet and do not have the opportunity to even buy an automobile. It's really tough to get a job in this economy. Glad you can showcase your talent.
