What was the pain like after? Do I need to request some narcotics or will motrin be enough.

1. the process for crowns and the pain after isn't bad at all
but if you're having a root canal, ask for something stronger than motrin

5. You shouldn't need anything strong for pain.
I have one crown.

6. two crowns here....
will need a third this year!

The only part that really involved any pain for me was prepping the tooth itself before taking the mold for the crown. Some of the tooth had to be drilled off, and the old filling drilled out. Novocaine took care of that.

Don't recall any pain with the rest of the process.

If the crown is in the back, and you can afford it, get gold ... it's more durable.

7. Motrin is fine
I've had more crowns than I care to talk about - in fact I'm getting a permanent one put on today. Take some motrin an hour or so before you go in.

8. I didn't need any.
Once the local wore off, I was fine. At most I'd take a couple ibuprofen just in case.

9. there is no pain, the tooth has no more nerve
Edited on Tue Mar-21-06 12:47 PM by LSK
I felt nothing at all. I didnt take anything. Check with the doctor. See if all the nerves for the tooth were killed by the root canal. If so, then theres no need for any pain killers.

10. A simple crown without a root canal, no pain after.
If it is done correctly, the pain is during the initial visit and novocaine usually takes care of that.

The nerve is left intact in a simple crown procedure and pain after the permanent crown is a sign that something needs adjustment and you should call your dentist, but that's not common.

11. You won't need anything for pain if this is followup from a root-canal.
Maybe some ibuprofen (or whatever you prefer) for soreness, but crowns really aren't a painful procedure.

wide open for so long! Take some Motrin or Tylenol and you'll be OK. :)

edit: If your dentist puts in a gold crown (usually only on the last molars so they won't show) be prepared to never, ever have ice cream or ice or anything cold go back there!

15. Oh, I have ice water and ice cream all the time...
I just never let the cold stuff go into the right, back side of my mouth where my 2 gold crowns are located.

14. No pain afterwards for me
My gums tend to get inflamed easily around my crowns, though, so be careful. The only pain with my crowns was just a little in the drilling part.
