Damn. Had to medicate the fish.
I noticed last week some symptoms of tail rot. So I've done melafix for 8 days.

Of course, being on surgery and all, I couldn't exactly do water changes until a couple months' ago...

Of course, melafix clouds the water a tad.

I've now put in new carbon and changed 30% of the water.

Will be doing 15% water changes every 3 days until the remaining cloudiness clears - and using the water vacuum on the gravel itself.

I think the fish will be fine, but I want to take it slowly - don't want to kill them.

1. I keep thinking I may set up my tank again...
...and then I read your post and the reminders of why I don't have fish any longer became crystal. *sigh* I have too much procrastination in my system. I hope your fish get better though. :-)

Oh, and sorry about hitting the reply to your post in leftofthedial's post. Getting my "reply" buttons mixed...

3. I had an oscar
he was about 10 inches long I had to catch him in a net and place eye drops in his eyes.
It was quite the pain.
He died a few months later and I placed him in a creek by my old appt.
he was a cool fish!

4. Well carbon removes the melafix
When treating with anything you have to remove the carbon.

I wouldn't worry about the cloudiness as long as you keep an eye on your water parameters (nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, pH). It sounds like your tank may be cycling and you are experiencing a bacterial bloom.

Really Melafix is a tonic and doesn't do much to cure fin or tail rot. It didn't do anything to cure the finrot on my Betta. Your best bet is to do a one-two punch of Maracyn and Maracyn 2 at the same time.

Maracyn is an antibiotic so it will kill off some of your good bacteria. You dose the tank daily and I would always do a water change before adding the meds if the parameters started to get too bad.

Good Luck!!

7. It will help your fish regrow the fins and for fish stress..
But I found that it wasn't effective in treating finrot. I keep a bottle in my fishie medicine chest for this purpose.
