Not as much as that the guy took another person's arrangement and let them say it was his, just the fact that people are freaking out about it.


A Live Mistake for "Idol" Favorite?

Fans were ready to make American Idol frontrunner Chris Daughtry walk the plank after hearing him sing an oddly familiar-sounding rendition of Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line" Tuesday night.

Daughtry, 26, who has risen quickly through the Idol ranks with his gravelly alt-rock voice and emotive performances, sang a slow, brooding version of the Cash classic during the '50s-themed episode, reaping his usual accolades from judges Randy Jackson,
Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell. (The video can be found at YouTube.com.) The impressed trio praised Daughtry for his originality and taking the song and making it his own. Cowell, who has come up surprisingly short with nah-sty remarks regarding Daughtry, told him that he was the only contestant on the show, ever, who "refused to compromise."

But Idol fans quickly took to their chat rooms after the episode aired, saying that they could swear they knew that "original" arrangement of "I Walk the Line" from somewhere--and not from the
Joaquin Phoenix-starring biopic.

As it turns out, Daughtry was doing a spot-on rendition of Live's 2001 cover of "I Walk the Line," featured on the album Good Rockin' Tonight: The Legacy of Sun Records and included on the band's 2004 greatest hits compilation, Awake: The Best of Live. "

it's just that old fogies like Simon, Paula, Randy and me have never heard that Live arrangement. I've never even heard of Live.

was he required to reveal that he used their arrangement?

cheating? I dont think so. But its pretty obvious the judges and most of the crowd dont know he's singing re-makes of the songs.

everyone else. and not singing it the way everyone else would. He's no cheater, just knows his genre and range.

I got that, sorry if I sounded like I was scolding you! I am a huge fan of Chris. I wish he'd quit and just put out his own record. but, it will be nice if he wins. I am no fan of pop, R&B, or country. Although Kelly has grown on me, esp. her dance mixes.

Ace Young: I like that Train song, and thought he did something different for him. Nice, if faithful, version. (8/10)

Bucky Covington: Solid performance in his comfort zone; could have gone for something edgier considering the tone of his voice. (7/10)

Chris Daughtry: I'll just say that I hate that Creed song, and can't be objective. (No Rating)

Kellie Pickler: Geez, that sounded like a parody of country music. Bad. (2/10)

Elliott Yamin: Passionate performance lifted his vocals up a bit. (6/10)

Katharine McPhee: showed her range, though her distinctive voice deserved better than a Christina Aguilera song. (8/10)

Lisa Tucker: Yes, she struggled at some points, but it wasn't as painful as Simon said. Love the song. (6/10)

Mandisa: Poor song choice, but she sure does make most everything sound enjoyable. (8/10)

Paris Bennett: Just as good or better than Beyonce IMO. (9/10)

Taylor Hicks: I like him most on the ballads so far. He's lost me on the faster songs. Very nice performance - old style, but not old sounding. (9/10)
