Booze + babes + bars
Booze... fine, babies... ok if they're someone elses, bars... no problem... but all three together?

At the Tainted Lady Lounge on Grand Avenue in Williamsburg, there are wall-to-wall paintings of bare-breasted pinup girls, a pink tequila drink called “Hedy Lamarr's Silk Stockings,” and plenty of underage patrons – most drinking milk.

Deb Parker, the bar owner and mother of an 18-month-old named Earl, started a “mommy and me” happy hour there soon after she opened the bar, so that new mothers would have a place to nurse their newborns and nurse a beer.

<snip>

So far Williamsburg hasn’t had a high profile backlash like one that occurred in Park Slope this year when a bartender at the Patio Lounge posted “A Stroller Manifesto” calling for an end to mixing of babies and booze.

The manifesto stated: “A bar is a place for adults to kick back and relax. How can you do that with a toddler running around or crying, getting changed on the table next to you or being breast-fed? And is a bar really the kind of environment a child should be exposed to? I know in Europe it is commonplace, but hey - this is America, baby.”

2. I would be annoyed if kids were running around in a bar
My girlfriends and I meet at a bar once a month to get away from the kids. Don't get me wrong, I love my daughter but she would be a total buzz kill.

3. Ummm--I thought you weren't supposed to drink while breastfeeding.
Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know. Does alcohol affect the milk?

4. Alcohol occurs in the same concentration
in breastmilk as in blood.

Beer is supposed to be good for increasing milk supply.

5. Yes, and about time, too
Parenthood is not equivalent to martyred sainthood. All I want is a tall beer, and a safe place for my kid to hang out in for a half hour. BFD.

7. yee - haa!
when my son was an infant I desperately wanted a beer! *(didn't since I was breastfeeding), but hey, parents need to get out occasionally too! I was so thrilled when I saw those movie theaters that allowed parents and little ones.

6. And why does EVERYTHING have to be for/include kids?
Can't go anywhere anymore without being surrounded by little kids. There should be places where one can go and not be around children.

8. um
I'm not saying anything lest this devolve into one of "those" discussions.

I guess the strip club and the loud rock club would qualify! But I have to admit that when I was a big club and concert type person prior to becoming a parent, I saw a little guy stomping his feet and dancing at a reggae show with his rasta dad. That was pretty cool.

9. I can say with a high degree of confidence that this is not
going to take over the bar scene! Effing relax, jack. There are plenty of places you can go without being exposed to immature humans.

10. If everyone is behaving responsibly what's the harm
in a "child friendly" bar or other establishment?

11. "... and we sat in the Korova Milkbar trying to make up our rassoodocks
what to do with the evening. The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence."
