Question for guitarists . . . .
I went to an estate sale last weekend. The deceased was 91. He had inherited some stuff from his brother who had been in the musical instrument business back east a long time ago. I bought this guitar for $100. It was in a box and still in the guitar case. There is a packing slip dated 1958. Does anyone know anything about this guitar?????

1. Right offhand, you paid about 1/100th of what it's worth
in mint condition. I've seen that axe before, but I can't name it. It came out originally around the same time as the (in)famous Flying V.

3. I would guess you paid far less than its value
A gibson that novel and that old has to be worth some cash.

It doesn't have a name plate, I gather?

8. SERIAL #002?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
JEEBUS CREEPING SHIT. THAT is TREMENDOUS.

You got a helluva deal. You may want to contact Guitar Player magazine-- seriously. They would probably do a feature story on it, I shit you not.

I would get several appraisals and then INSURE IT and put it in a climate-controlled location. If it's still in the case (AND the original box!!!!), you are looking at solid five figures for it.

I would re-case it ASAP, and keep it under lock and key. You could very well pay for somebody's college education with that guitar.

I'm looking for more info on it, too. I'll let you know what I find.

I'm starting to think you might really have something. I mean, if there were even 2000 of these made, what would be the odds that you had number 2? I'm far from the biggest guitar expert on this board, but I've been playing long enough and reading mags and such to be surprised to see such a novel body (i.e., I'd remember if I'd seen it) from Gibson, Fender et al. I used to own a Flying V about 20 yrs ago, even, and I am quite sure I've never seen a picute of this guitar despite my interest in Vs.. I *might* recognize the name, but I doubt that as well...

Congrats....

11. gotta see the wiki stub on it
here it is:

The Gibson Moderne electric solid-body guitars appeared at the 1958 NAMM trade show. It's body was made of korina and featured an elongated bass side(similar to the Flying V's), and scooped-out treble side. Along with the Explorer and Flying V, the Moderne was to be part Gibson's 1958 Modernistic guitar lineup. However, there is no conclusive evidence that any Moderines actually shipped in '58. Ted McCarty, the guitar's designer, was quoted as saying that four or five prototypes were built.

Gibson reissued the Moderne as the "Moderene Heritage" in 1982. Only 500 were produced.

If it really is #002, it was probably one of the prototypes. Good god. Screw college, you could retire in style with this one-- if it really IS what it is.

15. No shit....
I mean, IF that is #002 of the prototypes--not the reissue--well then, wow...

Oh yeah, just remembered you said it had 1958 slip inside...

Wow.

16. Also, according to wiki
the guitar's designer, Ted McCarty, passed away in 2001 aged 91. He also went on to serve as president of Bigsby (the tremolo makers) and also worked with Paul Reed Smith.

If this is truly #002 from 1958, I bet Gibson would probably pay a pretty penny for it to add to their collection. According to what I've read, there aren't ANY '58s still in existence.

Damn

10. The wiki article
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibson_Moderne

According to the article, none of the original '58s left the factory. And they only made 500 of the re-issue in the 80s.

interesting to say in GD or GD:P. The Oasis stuff was tiresome (after the 56,982nd post anyways), but at least he made up for it by being an astute commentator in the "Big Person" Forums.

The myth/legend of the 1958 Gibson Moderne has been the fantasy of guitar collectors for decades. If someone were to actually find one, if one is really out there, they could name their price.
