Start with a few basic chords: A E G D C F Em Am

Keep the fingers of your left hand (if you play right handed) perpendicular to the neck. Don't neglect your pinky finger. Use it.

When you practice switching between chords, don't break the rhythm with your right hand. Keep the rhythm no matter what. If your fingers on your left hand land all goofy and it takes a while to make the next chord formation, just keep the rhythm. You'll learn much faster if you don't let it stop you.

Black Jack Davey is the most simple song ever. Try learning that one.

Yes, slow painful forms of death are high on my "not to do" list, too.

I like what the Japanese call "pinpin korori," which refers to being healthy and active to an advanced age until you just keel over one day. A friend of my mother's managed that. Living in a small town in Wisconsin, she talked about "going to the nursing home to play the piano for the old folks" when she herself was 90.

She died while gardening at the age of 102. The mailman found her.

Now that's the way to go!
