10. my top 10 and why i think it.....
Edited on Thu Mar-30-06 12:30 AM by rppper
1. the ramones- because they inspired all the rest...PERIOD....from the sex pistols to green day......

2. black sabbath-influenced everyone from ministry to metallica, from industrial to grunge...sabbaths influence is there. gave us ozzy and dio too......the great granfathers of heavy, dark rock....

3. judas priest- first of the new wave of british metal...laid the ground work for bands like def leppard, iron maiden, motorhead, the scorpions...most consider priest to be the grandfathers of modern metal.....

4 queen- this is a no brainier here...heavy blues mixed with over the top theatrics...even after listening to them for well over 30 years i am still in awe of their talent.

5. helmet- the first of the alt-skater-grunge-punk rockers....3 chord power metal....influenced a host of 90's bands, but never got the credit they deserved......

6. soundgarden- bridged the gap between 80's metal and 90's grunge....thier first two albums are classics from beginning to end.

7. jimi hendrix- the original seattle feedback king. i can not even begin to list all the different styles of musicians he influenced, not to mention noel redding is one of my bass influennces....another no brainer

8. sublime- the most original band to come out of the 90's...ska/punk/reggae...i really think that if brad nowell would have lived, the music we hear today would be very different......

9. aerosmith- every american hair band owes areosmith a 10% cut from their royalties...inspired motley crue, ratt, cinderella, van halen, guns and roses.....say what you will......they are america's rolling stones...nuff said

10. the red hot chili peppers- huh? you ask yourself...think about it...they have had a career spanning from the late 80's untill now....funk/rock/rap/punk...look at the knock off's...limp bizkit, disturbed, POD, Korn, 311, primus, janes addiction...still making great music too....

HONORABLE MENTIONS......

metallica....missed the cut because they have been in a downward spiral the last few years...they have gotten way to hypocritical in their waning years. they need to get back to their roots again...perhaps have dave mustaine write 3 more albums for them again. cliff burton was another bass influence to me.

the beatles- although they are one of my favorites(rubber soul and up), the influences for todays music come from the mid 70's thru the 90's, hence i didn't include the stones, clapton, led zepplin or pink floyd either....

AC/DC-say what you will, but they sound almost the same today as they did in the mid 70's.....i just don't think they have influenced a lot of groups musicly

nirvana- i do not like suicides, and i feel any momentum nirvana started was squashed by the record companies within 2 years of Cobain's death. i feel the same about alice in chains too.....talent wasted via opiates. nirvana did give us dave grohl and the foo fighters though....listen to the foo fighters first CD....lots of anger at cobain and his widow....

tool-i had an inner strugle with this one, because i am a huge tool/inner circle fan, and you hear some influence in bands like mudvayne, but they are still too new to influence the current crop of rock bands...lets see what 5 more years brings...btw, imho, "lateralus" is probably the heaviest metal/rock song ever written......

11. In honor of Spinal Tap
I will list 11. And strictly rock, or I will be here all night, because of the genres I am omitting...

1. Lynyrd Skynyrd (the Ronnie Van Zant era only: 1973-1977, and the demos from 1968-1972; I do not acknowledge the current crop)
2. Frank Zappa (any lineup he fronted, with the Mothers of Invention in the 60's or his late 80's bands especially)
3. Bob Dylan (except the Big J albums)
4. Creedence Clearwater Revival (I even like John Fogerty's solo albums)
5. Neil Young (preferably with Crazy Horse, or solo, much more than other collaborations)
6. Los Lobos (the best new band of the 80's, and still evolving)
7. Allman Brothers Band (the Duane Allman era: 1969-1972, and the early 90's comeback albums)
8. Pink Floyd (any incarnation, from Syd Barret to David Gilmour, I love it all)
9. Warren Zevon (I miss him and still can't believe he is gone, a void exceeded only by FZ)
10. Gov't Mule (the greatest power trio of all time, edging ZZ Top and Cream, I shit you not)
11. Pearl Jam (the best new band of the 90's, and still evolving)

Is that a Volkswagon group? Or some cheap knock off of The Beatles. I think you mean the Monkeys.

18. Shit, this is hard...
The Clash
The Mars Volta
Refused
Gang of Four
Hüsker Dü
Mission of Burma
Radiohead
X
The Psychedelic Furs
The Stooges

Bah, not sure how pleased I am with that list, but it's all I can come up with right now. I tried to avoid confusing my favourites with what I consider "great," though it's a lost of what I consider the "greats" among my favourites. If that makes sense. I need sleep.
