1. .
The Avengers
Doctor Who
The Prisoner

(I know, they're all British... but The Avengers, season 5, was American and had the extended titles sequence the UK didn't have.)

11. Maverick
Who is the tall, dark stranger there?
Maverick is the name.
Ridin' the trail to who knows where,
Luck is his companion,
Gamblin' is his game.
Smooth as the handle on a gun.
Maverick is the name.
Wild as the wind in Oregon,
Blowin' up a canyon,
Easier to tame.

Riverboat, ring your bell,
Fare thee well, Annabel.
Luck is the lady that he loves the best.
Natchez to New Orleans
Livin on jacks and queens
Maverick is a legend of the west.

Riverboat, ring your bell,
Fare thee well, Annabel.
Luck is the lady that he loves the best.
Natchez to New Orleans
Livin on jacks and queens
Maverick is a legend of the west.
Maverick is a legend of the west.

18. 77 Sunset Strip
'Maverick' scripts were often re-written for use on '77 Sunset Strip' - and vice-versa. Amazing what one can learn on one of those crazy internets!

28. And covered by the ZaSu Pitts Memorial Orchestra!
How many other themes can make that claim? The ZPMO was one of those things that make SF the best...

http://www.trouserpress.com/entry.php?a=zasu_pitts_memorial_orchestra

The earlier Cooler Than Death features almost exclusively original material and only three musicians other than Ashman in common, but the Orchestra still gets cover billing. (Drummer Gina Schock, then still in the Go-Go's, appears on three of the seven tracks.) In this far more ambitious undertaking, Ashman plays slithery, rhythmic instrumentals with inventive horn work, sardonic dance rock, low-key/dramatic soundtrack music, even a noisy piano improvisation. But the piŠce de resistance is a brilliant juxtaposition: Katie Guthorn singing George Gershwin's "Summertime" over the "Peter Gunn Theme."

The other cut I liked to play from that, back in my college radio days, was "Driving in Chinatown". Heavy drums, bass, obviously -- and horns honking over it, perfectly!

29. The Tubes did it on the live album
in something they called the Crime Medley — Peter Gunn, Dragnet, Untouchables, one other one.

ZaSu Pitts Memorial Orchestra... dog, they had a singer who had fantastic legs. Joyce something.

Whatta flashback. :D

Just came to me: Joyce Imbesi.

Especially the first season's music...and especially the end music for that first season...haunting chords, with a mournful ending...but all the themes on that show were cool, inclusing the one everyone remembers...

30. Here's some UK shows:
The Avengers.... had two theme tunes: the earlier one very different to the one you probably remember when The Avengers went into colour - the Avengers started out in black and white on the old UK TV system - some were shot live and never recorded.

Doctor Who.... This is a theme classic, it's been rearranged and changed over the years but if you hear the 1950's original and you hear the 2005 theme today you can tell it's definitely the same TV show.

Steptoe and Son.... a comedy that has spawned others...

Heck, even the theme for the BBC newscasts of that era are spooky.

Mark.
