Poll question: With todays technology is the national spelling bee more or less

important than the national slide ruler contest?

5. Yes, "calcualtors" are always dead on. :D

And it's obvious from your reply that spell-check isn't always used. :silly:

4. It never was "important", but neither are school sports...
...but people still invest a lot of time, money and emotion in them. Spelling bees, like science fairs, are one of few chances for brainy, geeky kids to get the spotlight for a little while.

I know, because I won my 5th grade spelling bee at my school, but then lost at the citywide bee. But for a moment, it was pretty great getting all the attaboys.

So here's to the spelling bee.

:toast:

7. Microsoft Word is wrong half the time about grammatical errors.
And spell-check doesn't always take into account grammatical usage. Since I'm generally very good at spelling, I don't tend to use spell-check. My confidence saves time, but I've probably blundered on occasion.

It's a damn good thing calculators are accurate because I am much less confident in my mathematical abilities.

9. If you cannot spell, you cannot write.
That's it in a nutshell.

Ask any moran. ;-)

12. Today's technology doesn't appear to help many people
based on some of the emails I've had to decipher in my time. And spell-check doesn't catch when incorrect (but correctly spelled) words are used. Besides, just because modern conveniences exist doesn't mean we should use them as crutches.

13. A pipe gives a wise man time to think and a fool something
to stick in his mouth.

Much the same with spell checkers and calculators. In the hands of a wise user they are good tools. But the fool will be more of one for relying on them.
