2. I'd have to go with Archie Bunker.
George Jefferson had a funnier support cast to work with. But George Jefferson himself wasn't as funny as Archie Bunker.

3. It's a tie with me
I forget who was the original George Jefferson when they were the Bunker's neighbors but Sherman Helmsley was definitely better for the part when they started the series. What made Archie so funny was that he truly had no clue he was a bigoted racist.

4. And he showed how ridiculous a racist really looks.
I think All in the Family was actually fairly important for our society's development in that regard.

6. Sherman Helmsley was the original George Jefferson on All in the Family.
I loved All in the Family. One of the best TV shows ever.

8. Thanks
After a little research I discovered:

When the characters of George and Louise Jefferson were first introduced during the first season, only Louise was seen at first and George was only talked about. Sherman Hemsley, who was Norman Lear's first choice to play George, was performing in the Broadway musical "Purlie" and didn't want to break his commitment to that show. However, Lear kept the role waiting for him until he was finished appearing in the musical.

And then:

The name of George Jefferson's brother, who was living with George and Louise, was Henry. In fact Henry once posed as George because George, who was as big a bigot as Archie, didn't want to set foot in the Bunker's house.

Bad memory or a little confusion.

I'm comin' 'Lizabeth! I'm comin'! And his much-maligned "Aunt Edna" (i think that was her name) was a hoot.

12. George Jefferson.
At least he was funny. Archie Bunker was just loud and irritating.
