6. WTF doesn't HBO show their movies in widescreen?
Why would anyone voluntarily allow about 1/3 of their movie to disappear??? Even alot of good TV dramas are widescreen now (will never forgive Joss for not having "Buffy" in WS)

"Sith" is on HBO tomorrow night -- it'll look horrible.

7. They do on the HD channel.
HBO said years ago (before WS TVs were affordable) that people "hate" letterboxing, so they were catering to the Joe Sixpacks of the world. They need to revisit that policy. People are used to it now.:eyes:

8. David Lean's original composition simply won't fit on a Television

Besides that, there's just too much distracting scenery. Rather than watching the characters, the viewer's attention is held by those two windows in the background. What's beyond them? This sort of compositional flaw runs throughout the film.

Finally, with modern digital technology it has become possible to eliminate the problems associated with pan & scan along with correcting directorial errors in the original film that are still visible in the letterbox version. The FlikFX digital recomposition system now places all the actors on the television screen without those jarring jumps back and forth all over the original frame. Attention distractions by the windows in the background have been reduced by over 50%. Additionally, the drama is heightened as the sergeant now faces off against Mr. Lawrence.

9. Ben-Hur.
http://www.widescreenmuseum.com/flikfx/b-h-p+s-left.jpg http://www.widescreenmuseum.com/flikfx/b-h-p+s-right.jpg

Pan & Scan bounces us all over the wide image, allowing us to see just a hint of the whole picture. Since you recognize all those problems with Lawrence of Arabia it seems a waste of time to point out the problems that this approach presents for proper telling of the story. What is supposed to be a race to the death between two bitter enemies comes off as a couple of guys just "doing their own thing". Audiences might wonder who or what Messala is lashing at, and just as surely, they'll be uncertain why Ben-Hur is being distracted by a whip. This is not the way the story goes.

All the excitement, and none of the confusion of "normal" television transfers. Now there's no doubt about the enmity of the two combatants in the sand of the arena. The story, at long last, becomes clearer. The point of this scene is not to show a race, but to depict the final showdown of two enemies. Now they battle to the death in the same chariot. And the new improved version sets a far better example for the young people. No longer are these two men wasting huge amounts of energy by using eight horses to settle their score. Now they are doing the politically correct thing by car pooling. Truly, this tale has now been made one that will excite and educate the masses for decades.

14. My wife hates widescreen
She feels like she's getting cheated because of the blank spaces above and under the screen.

16. She's not being cheated.
The original director's intent is all on the screen. Everything filmed is on your screen. The picture may be smaller, but you are not missing anything. Blowing it up to fit a square TV means cutting off key information that may be in the film. She's actually being cheated if she's watching a square TV all filled up. WS TVs are a bit different, cause half of the films are wider than a widescreen TV, but the letterboxes are smaller than on a square one.

For example...

Forrest Gump. You see Forrest sitting on the bench talking about his adventures, but you only catch a glimpse every now and then of the people on the other side of the bench. Some of their reactions are funny.

Die Hard. When the Sgt. walks through the bottom floor, thinking it's a crank call, he walks into the elevator area. He stops, says "Oh' the Hell with this!", and turns back. What you don't see on the Pan and Scan version is the man with the gun behind the wall, waiting for him to round the corner. You do see that in Widescreen.

Indiana Jones. Most glaring is when Indy is about to walk on the stones that spell Jehova (in latin), he's standing there choosing the next letter, and in the back, by the twin blades from the first test, is Donovan and Elsa, watching him so they can follow him to the Grail.

The Music Man. In Pan & scan you see only 5 band members on the screen at once. In widescreen, you see the whole marching band.

I just can't convince her of the fact. It's easier for me to just let it go than to press the issue.
