We've heard from Bravo; what do you think was the #1 comedy (movie) ever?
Bravo (cable network), giving no clue as far as I heard as to criteria or by whom the top 100 were selecte, went with "Animal House." Their top 100 featured a number of truly odd choices and placements on the list. I posted about it the other day http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=5208630
as follows:
#47 (or so) Raising Arizona; #40 Monty Python & the Holy Grail
Austin Powers outranked both, Clerks outranked that, A Fish Called Wanda is coming up.

Apparently Anchorman was an even #100, Forty Year Old Virgin was in the top 10, and other improbably stuff.

Anyway: Whuddayathink? As an officially-licensed idiot, I have to go with "Airplane!"

2. I saw that going on, turned it on for about fifteen minutes
Edited on Fri Jun-02-06 04:50 PM by MadHound
Shrugged my shoulders and went on. Hey, it's an opinion when all is said and done, and as they say, opinions are like assholes:shrug:

From the little I saw, I didn't agree with what they put up, but hey, there are a lot of movie critics I've never agreed with. From the little I saw it seemed that they were focused more on comedies from the past ten years rather than earlier, better(in my opinion) work by the masters like Pryor, Wilder, etc. But hey, that's my opinion:evilgrin:

So they put Animal House at number one. Not a bad choice, it was a great movie, and one that still makes me SHOUT(kick my heels up and)SHOUT(throw my hands up and)SHOUT! C'mon now! Say you will!:hi:

29. Two great ones, but
I still laugh at my favorite comedy, Arsenic and Old Lace. I couldn't watch more than a few minutes of the list thing on Bravo, but I'm curious about the placement of Arsenic and Old Lace.

9. Awful Truth (1937)
Awful Truth w/ Cary Grant and ever diaphanous Irene Dunne

Man, she's the BEST lookin' gal I've *ever* laid eyes on!

Some of the movies in the Bravo list are moderately humorous, but it's lost a lot of credibility for me due to it's low count of the classic screwballs (they're called "classic" for a reason, fools!)

For sheer audacious, pushing it to the edge, I'd say Strangelove.

13. It was a bad list
I could agree with Animal House and Caddyshack being up at the top of the list, but the fact that Shrek (no 3) beat out Airplane! (no 7, I think). I think Shrek is a cute movie but it is in no way the third funniest movie ever made.

Also aside from Dr. Strangelove and a few Woodie Allen films, there was almost nothing on that list prior to 1975. I find it hard to believe that there were only a half a dozen funny movies pre-1975.

Oh yeah and Anchorman is 100??? How the hell does Dogeball make it into the top 20 but Anchorman barely make the list? It boggles the mind

19. Agree Anchorman I think was better than Dodgeball
I didn't see the show but the list was bs. I loved Shrek and thought it entertaining same thing with Wedding Singer which was also high but those two were higher than the original Producers and that movie is a classic. Funniest movie of all time though, I can't decide.

below Wedding Crashers? Below the Naked Gun series? (I'm sorry, they had some funny moments, but it was straight from the TV show!!)

below Pee-Wee's Big Adventure?

out there. If they went with Animal House, I'll bet that Caddyshack was a contender, and I liked that more than Animal House. I also liked Back to School a lot too.

24. The Worst Movie List I Have Ever Seen
Look, I like low-brow humor. But most of those movies are not only dumb, but derivative and appeal to morons. I think Bravo plagarized this list from "The Man Show."

About half the movies are from the last five years. Not a single Marx Brothers movie. I thought a little better of Bravo.

30. Bringing up Baby
I laugh so hard at this movie every time it's on. It should have been on the list. I am sure there are other classic comedies but that Bravo list was pretty pathetic overall. Yes a lot of those movies were funny. But maybe it's because I hate gross-out comedies that I do not find the Farrelly brothers' movies funny at all.

33. Comedy is so subjective. On some days my list might match theirs exactly
and on other days it might have nothing in common.

Most days "A Fish Called Wanda" is in my top five, though.
