Poll question: What is your policy on ignoring DUers? (POLL)
How do you use your powers of IGNORE on DU? (I ask only because I have a great curiousity about this.)

5. I have not put anyone on ignore here in the two years I've been here.
Edited on Sun Jun-04-06 12:42 PM by Selatius
I have seen some offensive things here, but freedom of speech means hearing or seeing things you may not want to hear, but it may be necessary in order to keep one grounded.

I've dealt with Neo-Nazis, ultra-rightwing Likudniks, Marxists, nationalists, and all other kinds of people, so I'm used to difficulty.

I don't ever want to live in a self-affirming bubble where only "yes" people are present with no voices of dissent. Freedom of speech is a two-way street, not a one-way street.

8. When I start sputtering at the screen and
can't type fast enough to get a cutting reply onto the edit message screen - a wee tiny voice usually (not always) speaks to me and says, hey fool, this is only a forum and there is the ignore button... After fortunately only a few episodes where I didn't listen to the voice, I have learned that it is the smart thing for me to put that person on ignore...

However, I do go back after a day or so and take them off the ignore list as I do want to hear what they have to say. I have yet to find someone that is an ***hole 24/7.

16. I never use the ignore button
Using the ignore button to me would be the same as walking thru a rattlesnake invested field and assuming they won't bite you if you just don't look at them. Using the ignore button is what I and too many other Americans did with the Republican party for too long, and look what that got us.

I would much rather have some sort of flag button to use on the posters who seem to skirt on the edge of troll-dom, than to not see their repetitive nefarious doings. A flag button would remind me that I had suspicions about about certain posters' motives when viewing subsequent posts by them.

18. I never put anyone on ignore. What happens when you do?
If I put someone on ignore, does that mean his messages show up (to me) as deleted messages? Do I miss half an argument if someone is on ignore? If that's the case, it seems to me that putting people on ignore means I miss part of the dialog.

23. Hateful people are the ones I have on ignore
I have only a few, actually, but it's been for years. Once a year I clear the list to see if any of them have changed, but the list is generally repopulated right quick by repeat offenders. I don't mind other opinions, I want to read those. But it's not worth the aggravation to encounter something you know from experience is hateful bullshit when you don't have to.

I ignore people who consistently demonstrate they are incapable of a rational discussion. If you can't think your way from A to B to C, I don't wanna waste my time on it. I also ignore people who are simply rude. I figure, I get enough of that IRL, why subject myself to it here? (I also ignore people who are rude IRL, ha ha!)

Instead of following your fetish with rationalism? :P

Also, isn't it easy to think from A to B to C? That means your getting stupider. It's much harder going uphill from C to B to A where the alites hang out.

Yikes! I hope you do not ignore people for telling bad grammer 'jokes'. :hide:

So, if I see flame here of the neocon brand -I'll use the red X to keep me from responding in a reactionary manner. I've found over many years of fighting the good fight that you cannot reason with that type of mind anyway.

It's too hard to predict how mods will apply the rules. I had a thread locked because I said DINO's are really Republicans. It was locked citing that we are supposed to support Dems. Well, I thought I *WAS* supporting Dems, and fighting the masqueraders in the Dem party. I wont do it again and I'm very sorry if I offended someone. From now on, the JoeMentum is with me.

39. I use ignore for most the above reasons other people have.
I find also that when I take some people off, I end up putting them right back on. I put some OPs on ignore when I see them making lots and lots of OPs throughout the day with no real substance to their posts. If a person is a flame-baiter consistently, I will sometimes put them on ignore. Also the trolls. I think there are a lot of them, and people just go for their bait.

43. I wonder what happens if you put YOURSELF on ignore?
I've always been afraid to try it. I might find myself sucked into a space-time incontenence, unable to escape. (When you're the Queen of England, as I am, you can afford to take the time to mull over such imponderables between breakfast and high tea.)

But to answer your question: no. I ignore people the old-fashioned way -- I ignore them. But no one around here has said anything yet that made me want to ignore them either way. I guess that's why I'm just so darn lovable. :eyes:

46. Other.....
I've put people on ignore before....normally, for very brief periods.

The first one was someone who had been my friend, and putting him on ignore hurt quite a lot.

But he had turned against me, and wasn't talking to me in his threads. And, frankly, that hurt.

I even PM'd him, trying to get him to talk to me, and he didn't. And that hurt...

So, onto the ignore list he went, until I'd healed.

The other person was also someone I'd been friends with......but she was behaving badly, and I just couldn't take it.

So, the same for her.

Now, both of these folks are off my ignore list, and life goes on. This feature is very useful. I did find finally, that I was too curious about what both people were saying to leave them on ignore.
