1. other
I avoid refined shit like bleached flour, HFC, and try to get a lot of protein in me-- like cottage cheese, lean turkey, and lots of sushi and pot :9

and stoli vodka. Mmm.

6. Lean meat...
If you like lean meat, try buffalo. It is low in fat and cholesterol. I will no longer bring beef into my home.

10. I'm not a big fan of red meat
But thanks for the suggestion-- if you like red meat, you might enjoy ostrich; I hear it takes like steak, but is no where near as bad for you.:hi:

Welcome to DU, btw!

12. Big Bird...
Not of fan of ostrich, but I still want to try emu. I'll be visiting my parents in Florida this month and there is an emu farm just up the road. Thankfully, I'm minutes from a buffalo farm. The only problem I have is walking out of the shop and having to look at the big beasts.

14. Missed one: "Pescetarian". Yes it's a real classification.
I am Vegan plus Fish (usually sushi) which falls under the unbrella of "pescetarianism". I didn't know there was a word for this until just last week.

"Pesco/pollo vegetarianism", "pescetarianism" or "semi-vegetarianism" are neologisms coined to describe certain lifestyles of restricted diet. Most commonly, these include the practice of not eating certain types of meat (most commonly red meat such as beef, pork, lamb) while allowing other meats, such as seafood. There are usually no restrictions on non-flesh animal products such as dairy and eggs.

19. it's more about $$
After sophomore year, you no longer have meal cards for the campus cafeterias. Freshman and Sophomore year, I was pretty good about eating damn near vegetarian (I had my weak moments-- nothing tastes better than chicken strips at 4 AM when you're drunk, stoned, and starving). But when I moved off campus, I had to buy my own food. My work study job was enough for 40 week-- I had bills to pay, and it just was impossible to eat right. I gained a ton of weight, and am working it off now.

22. Kind of South Beachy/Atkins...
Edited on Sun Jun-04-06 08:13 PM by Iniquitous Bunny
I put on a a few pounds this year and really, really want to get back into my size 8's for my wedding in January. I've recently nipped my stress eating and got back into better habits. (Hopefully, once I switch around my stupid birth control, that'll help too. :grr: Stupid pill!)

Here's what I made for dinner (and it was freakin' yummy):

I sauteed fresh garlic, mushrooms, and onions in olive oil, then added firm tofu, spinach, and tomatoes. Then I threw in fresh ground pepper, red pepper, and a dash of curry. I eat a lot of high protein foods (tofu, lean meats, eggs), nuts, healthy oils, non-starchy veggies, and some whole grains. Zero sugar and zero refined white flour.

29. I eat muslix with yogurt for breakfast and supper
and a salad - different varieties everday, sometimes steak, sometimes chicken, sometimes bacon, but lots of greens and some cheese - for lunch. Nothing white or refined. Yogurt is sweetened with splenda. Once in a while a glass of red wine for lunch. I know...sounds boring, but it's actually a good regimen for me. If I allow myself too many choices, I go off the deep end. But I am turning sixty in October, and my kids are throwing me a surprise party that I accidentally (no, honest) found out about, and I would rather not look sixty at my party. :)

33. My version of South Beach...low carb, low cal....lots of slack
Tons of fresh vegetables/fruit, damn little bread/potatoes/rice. I haven't had a single restaurant burger this year, not a single soft drink, two pieces of fried chicken, less than a tablespoon of mayo and not even one french fry (and NO catsup-its loaded with sugar!). I can even overcome my weakness-doughnuts. I haven't had a single krispy-kreme all year and I feel it!

And its really not a problem.

With a heavy exercise routine and tough diet, I've lost 35 pounds since mid-January. It can be done.

36. My chiropractor friend tells me that its all about the exercise....
I've gone from ABSOLUTELY none in the last three decades to 1 1/2 hours a day, 5-6 days a week. 3 miles treadmill (45 minutes), 3 mile bicycle (15 minutes) 15-30 minutes on weight training machines and (on good days) a few laps in the pool.

I'll bet I could pretty much eat whatever I like at this point, but DAHMN, I love being majorly thinner and I hate to take chances.

My mom beat that into me. We'd get halves and quarters or free-range, organic, locally processed goat and lamb when I was growing up, and my mother's greatest joy was finding organic, local bacon to make first tomato BLTs with.

I don't do packaged, processed crap. But in terms of actual food I'll eat anything - my own view is that there is no unhealthy food, only unhealthy quantities and unhealthy preparation (i.e., by a supermarket or fast-'food' chain).

Where possible, organic, fair-trade, locally produced, free-range and all of that stuff too.

49. Omnivore
but I try and eat 'whole foods'...when I eat carbs I go for whole wheat and grains, fresh produce, naturally raised meat etc...

And I keep my carbs low if I'm not being active that day...and increase them when I have a particularly active day and give myself a little slack on weekends and plenty of slack at the occasionally party. And by slack I mean that's when I get my fat and even when I go for carbs in sweets I still try and stay with natural carbs rather junk food like hostest cupcakes that sort of thing. If I'm wanting a hamburger for example I still never go to McD's I make the burger myself and will use a nice crusty whole wheat bun usually.

And plenty of exercise.
