I have a really stupid question
L's funeral is Tuesday and will be held at the local military cemetary. Since L was a combat wounded WWII vet, will a flag be presented to his family? I know there will be a bugler and a 21 gun salute, but since I have never been to a military funeral, just wondering what to expect.

1. It seems to me, my dear KitchenWitch.......
That there would be a flag presented.....

But I'm not 100% certain of this either......

2. I can't be sure...
My dad would probably know but I imagine he's asleep by now.

I'd think, logically, that if they've planned the bugler and the 21-gun salute, the flag presentation is in order.

Of course, logic...military...

You see the problem....

4. LOL
no kidding.

It is a strange situation. L has no living relatives. My ex is, in essence, his stepson, thus making my son his grandson. I am guessing the flag will be presented to my ex.

3. Yes. My dad was a WWII vet,
and my mother got a flag when he died, even though it wasn't a miltary funeral. I think this is given to all veterans, or maybe all combat veterans.

5. Thank you
Do you know what happens in the case of there being no living blood relatives, but very close friends at the funeral?

6. I don't, but you should be able to ask the honor guard
before the ceremony.

13. I believe the funeral director will make arrangements with
whomever is paying to present the flag to the correct person.

9. It's hardly a stupid question
I believe your local VFW might be able to answer it — probably not the actual recipient by name, but they should know something about a line of succession or whatever.

At my dad's funeral, the flag was presented to my sister.

It's not a 21-gun salute, though. At military funerals for all but generals and admirals, the custom is for seven riflemen to each fire three rounds. The actual 21-gun salute is reserved for current and former presidents, other heads of state or members of reigning royal families, and for national flags.

10. My grandfather died a couple months ago.
It wasn't at a military cemetary, but he was in WWII, a flag was presented to the family and a couple days later we got a letter from the Shrub thanking us for his service in WWII.

11. Yes
At my Grandfather's funeral, we were presented with a flag, because he'd served in WWII.

15. My Grandpappy.....
WWI vet, was presented a 19 gun salute....

I seem to remember....

I think 21 gun salutes are reserved for vets actually killed in action...

I don't know....

Just guessing...
