Foods/drinks you once loved but can no longer stand.
Gin and tonics were my drink of choice in college, but now the smell of gin nauseates me. What about you?

1. I went from gin and tonic to vodka and tonic
but I haven't had one now for maybe 20 years. A little wine at dinner is it for me now. And another thing: I can't even drink wine on an airplane any more. I get totally snockered on just 1 glass.

2. I would be a happy man if there were more music clubs that served coffee
rather than or along with alcohol. Not like coffeehouse music, either, but regular, plugged-in stuff. There is a dearth of these types of places. I'm more of a coffee drinker in my old age.

12. We oldsters need the caffeine to stay up past our bedtimes!
Diet Coke just doesn't cut it.

I don't have anything against alcohol--but a glass or two of wine or a nice cocktail with a bite to eat are more my speed, nowadays. (Heh--she said "speed"!)

3. Smarties candy.
Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 03:17 PM by NewWaveChick1981
:puke: I loved them as a kid, but I got deathly ill from drinking water in Italy in 1977 after eating a bag of candy that was identical to Smarties. To this day, I cannot bear the thought of Smarties! :( The Smarties didn't make me sick, but they'll always be associated in my mind...

4. Peanut butter, jelly, hot dogs, baloney, most pizza
Too much during childhood, to the point they could be removed from the earth and I wouldn't care.

On the other hand, we are entering gin and tonic season. I love 'em on a hot day. And, a martini is not a martini without gin. These vodka martinis are naught but false pretenders to the throne.

5. I used to love gin & tonics,
Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 03:26 PM by Beware the Beast Man
but a couple weeks ago I had a couple (not even enough to get tipsy), and they made me nauseous. If I do drink, it's usually a microbrew.

7. Ah martinis!
That brings back fond memories of my fling with a handsome navy captain. We used to drink martinis and gaze into one another's eyes. However, I learned a lesson: don't drink with the navy. It can be bad on the liver.

9. Hey, Me To...
I used to absolutely LOVE those things when I was a kid. But either my memory is faulty or they have somehow become more paltry over time. I mean, I recall they at least had some filling in the middle, but the last time I tried one, not only did they seem desiccant-dry, that filling layer was infintesimal (and kinda crunchy to boot). According to the expiration date, they certainly weren't old either.

I notice that a lot about foods I recall from childhood (or even things from only a decade or so ago) ... either my tastebuds have undergone a drastic transformation, or the quality of some of this stuff has declined precipitously. While I suspect some degree of transformation, I'm also pretty sure there's a quality issue in there too.

Never drank Southern Comfort without regretting it the next day. After a night of Southern comfort abuse, I once awoke naked in my VW van, and the floor was about 5" deep in barf, which I did not notice until I got down from the bed. Blaaaaaaaaaah.

I was drinking a Coke one day a few years back, and it hit me... "this really tastes awful. Why do I keep drinking this crap?"

It's one of those things you never question (well, seldom question). You just drink the shit because you always have. I've barely had a sip of in in five years now.

Now I can't stand the stuff. I think part of it is the quality has gone downhill. Not that it was ever at the pinnacle to begin with.

20. McDonald's Fries used to be memorable...
I can still recall the old-style McDonald's fries as if they were an event unto themselves back in the day when they were deep-fried in beef-tallow. Probably not all too good for a person, but definitely tasty little buggers.

These days, while the fries retain their shape, the taste is definitely something that would not induce me to pull off the highway for some (plus it doesn't help that just about every McDonald's I go to these days cooks those things until they become crunchy, high-tensile-strength mouth-javelins that poke, prod, and otherwise assualt the gums).

Speaking of fries, seems to me we should have a fry shape poll: straight or wavy? I'll pick straight every time (something about wavy fries bugs me!).

21. Anything with meat in it
My body now rejects it.

When were in Vegas, I made the mistake of having a veggie pasta dish that has chicken broth as a base (but no actual meat in it.) That night I awoke with cramps that almost had me doubled over and spent a lot of time in the bathroom (to put it delicately.)

I became a vegetarian for health reasons, but now it's a matter of necessity.

28. Alcoholic
drinks? I started at 18 with Scotch, got sick of it (literally), went to screwdrivers (blech, now!), then to milder drinks until I stopped at Virgin pina coladas and virgin strawberry daiquiris.

One of my meds distorts smell and taste, so I can no longer stand to drink my beloved Pepsi. (It tastes metallic, or just...wrong.)

That's about it.
