Poll question: Meet HRC or go to astronomical party?
Okay, several months ago I signed up for the Cherry Springs Star Party at Cherry Sp., PA, one of the darkest public sites east of the Mississippi. I am an amtuer astronomer and was looking forward to using my new 12.5" scope under the dark skies. I could go next month instead, but it would not be a well-attended public event with vendors and consessions. In any case, it is a five hour drive from my house each way. I am also signed up for the annual Black Forest Star Party, same location in August. I go every year.

Here's the dilemma. I just found out that the same weekend, Rep. Sherrod Brown (D-OH 13) is having a fund raiser for his U.S. Senate race. For $1000, I can have my picture taken with him and with HRC who will be there too. Now my vanity wants a picture. Also, it will be an opportunity to give my sage advice to both of them. (They're corrupt, we are not and ejecting Jefferson is a good way to prove it.) Also, I can remind them that no Senator has been elected president since 1960--just saying is all! In addition, it would be a good time to mention to Sherrod who I already know personally that he will need a bigger staff in the Senate and that I am as good of a choice as anyone. Other notables like future governor Ted Strickland might be there. My wife will be out of town, so she will not be there. The money is a bite, but is not the main hurdle. The real question is, is it worth missing the CSSP for HRC. (After all, I can send Sherrod cash anytime.)

1. Just two votes and no comments?
C'mon, it's a chance to meet the big H. Is she that much disliked around here. If so, she will have trouble in NH, nevermind the middle west.

3. Yes, I would rather it was Dr. Dean or Al Gore.

I met HRC very briefly once before. I will say she has a hell of a stage presence. One issue for any star party is rolling dice on the weather. Summer is the clearest time of the year for this part of the country, but even so there is a good chance of being clouded over or even rained out. Of course, the worst that would happen is getting a good night sleep in the hills after listening to the shortwave.

5. Excuse me? I've outgrown the geek thing.
The stars will likely outlast me, HRC and this whole nation. What if it was Feingold?

10. That's a reason for me to go to the astro event.
My backyard is not so amazing so I should miss a chance for good viewing.

9. It looks like you're looking for permission to go to the Brown thing.
Hey, if you wanna go, go. That Senate seat is a good cause. HRC may be the main attraction, but it benefits Brown, right?

The stars will be there next month. (Heck, it might be better to go without the rest of the circus.)

As for me...I'd probably go to the astronomy thing (me = geek ... and it's OK to admit you're a geek into adulthood), because I don't have $1,000 to give to a candidate. Assuming the astronomy thing won't cost as much, anyway.

I've had my picture taken with Feingold for free.

13. Nah, I really don't know.
It might be better in July sans circus with my choice of observing field spots. In August is Black Forest which will be a very dark circus. On the other hand, a star party means relatively clean port-a-potties, a lunch vendor, many other scopes to see and vendors to shop at in the day. (Cherry Springs is pretty primative and the permanent latrines are not very pleasant.) The most expensive thing about the star party is the fuel to get there and the road time. I already have the scope. I was going to give Sherrod a big check anyway, though a little later on. I told him that if he ran, I would give a big donation. Already gave $500 during the primary season. Strickland is considered the more important race, but he doesn't need my help. DeWine will be tougher to knock off.

12. Oohhhh!
I also thought you meant Human Rights Campaign, which confused the shit out of when you said "she" above. Gee, that's a tough one - but I'd go sky-gazing. If it gets cloudy, can you still get into the event?

14. "If it gets cloudy, can you still get into the event?"
No. I have to respond to the invitation in the next couple of days. Besides, in all probability, I will not know if it will get cloudy until I am in PA in the dark five hours from Cleveland.
