8. His TX Failed Four Years Ago; He Died of a Cardiac Infection
He had a transplant, which failed (he had uncontrolled hypertension, which caused his ESRD and the failure of his tx) and had been receiving dialysis. He had some major infections - along with drug abuse - and went into a hospital last November and died yesterday of periocarditis.

Abuse of heroin causes a form of FSGS that is reversible if the abuse is stopped, but apparently his drug of choice was cocaine, which doesn't play well with hypertension. He had a private organ donation; drug abuse (usually; exceptions are made for the famous - see Mickey Mantle) removes a person from the UNOS list.

Excellent keyboard player. Probably the greatest musical talent the Beatles have worked with over the years.

5. Other than EC on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
no disrespect to Billy Preston...he was one of my favorite keyboard players and, as George Harrison said, he was a primary reason why the Beatles stayed together during the filming of "Let It Be".

This gets me wondering...what other guests have performed on Beatles records? I can only think of Brian Jones at the moment ("You Know My Name, Look Up The Number")

6. Nicky Hopkins did the piano solo on "Revolution."

I'm also drawing a blank. They mostly employed George Martin and session musicians for additional instruments.

Oh, Donovan contributed background vocals on "Yellow Submarine," as well.

11. wow...didn't know that
The Beatles turned so insular during their studio period after they stopped playing live that I guess there wasn't much room for "guest stars"

Of course, we can't forget Yoko Ono's memorable cameos (Revolution #9, etc.)

7. RIP. I used to drive my mother nuts by endlessly and loudly playing
one particular song from an album of which I no longer remember the title. I don't even know if he wrote it but it went something like this:

"I'm so tired of being around people that don't know their ass from a hole in the ground".

He was the first musical guest ever on SNL.

Sweet Journey Crazy Organ Man.

:-)

10. Billy performed with a choir I was singing in
back in the early '90s. I remember him from his big 'fro and fringe jacket days. He looked like a conservative middle-aged businessman when he played with us, though!
