6. I first learned blacksmithing from one of my grandfathers
Edited on Tue Jun-06-06 08:26 PM by Ptah
I was ten or eleven years old. (1960)
I did work making ornamental iron for money
in the late seventies for a few years.
I rarely do it lately. The few pieces I do make
end up as gifts.

Thank you for your compliments.

11. I love that.
I keep forgetting to go out and produce something out of metal. I have the ability, but keep spending my time freaking out about politics, and spending my time here.

That's a very cool table. I am assuming it's a table.

26. My dear Ptah!
Iron working? My god, man, is there anything you don't do?

These are so gorgeous!

Do you have a shop where you make these? Or maybe I should ask, where do you make these?

Home, or somewhere else?

Amazing, wherever and however you do them!

30. That piece is about 4 years old.
I don't have my meager tools set up right now.

It's a lot of work and I've gotten lazy in my advancing years.

Thanks.

9. Nice work
I sew too but am not as talented as that. I have yet to design and make a garment from scratch. But with my 12 years of shoe factory stitching experience, I found it no trouble to buy stuff from Goodwill and fit it to my proportions with a little/
trial and error. I once bought a red satin gown for 6 bucks and made it fit me for our Governor's inaugural ball. With accessories, and hair and makeup, I got a ton of compliments. I liked the fact that nobody knew! ;-)

Great job on the gown!

These are actually quite simple macrame knots.....It is very durable and theft-proof!

23. Thank you, my dear Ptah!
It isn't very comfortable, actually.....

The materials are rather scratchy....

So I carry it over my shoulder, where it will rest against my shirt....

And then I don't feel it!

IF I take my driving trip...

And IF I stop to visit you......

YOU will get to see it, up close and personal!

Thank you for your compliments!

28. Lovely!
I'm crazy for camera straps that are unique and cool—I bet it's comfortable too.

I'm still using the one that came with the cam, it's very uncomfy!

29. My dear Placebo!
Oh, I thank you so much!

Actually, since the macrame cord is a bit scratchy, it isn't very comfortable against my bare skin...

So, I just carry it on my shoulder, against my shirt, and then it doesn't bother me!

I wanted to make something, and I didn't want it to take too long....

This just took a few hours, and then I had something I truly needed!

17. Don't get me started.
Sometimes I take on things just because I am possessed. If I thought for a few minutes, I would realize what I was getting into. I just jumped into that trailer. It took a couple of weeks.

The thing that bothers me is that I'll sit around, bored out of my skull for years on end, anxiously pouring over the news to see if anything is changine in America. And I really should be in the shop playing with metal. I've been meaning to do just what you made, for the longest time. I suppose you know what I mean. I guess I'm just too pragmatic. I need someone to aim me in a creative direction. Not just function. /end rant. (:

20. Fantastic!
Wow! I love your ideas.

I'm guessing drawer pulls. And that other looks like a finishing decoration for maybe the back of a chair or a lamp.

It's the ideas that are the work. Making the part just follows. It's all mechanical after the idea and conception.

Yes, I do want to. My problem is I trained as a mechanical engineer and a machinist. Although... I love Miles Davis and Lee Morgan and just about any genre of good music. For what that's worth. It's in there, I just don't know how to get at it.

21. An engineer usually has room for a new book or two.
My recommendations:

New Edge of the Anvil: A Resource Book for the
Blacksmith

by Jack Andrews

The Art of Blacksmithing

by Alex W. Bealer

Professional Smithing: Traditional Techniques for
Decorative Ironwork, Whitesmithing, Hardware,
Toolmaking, and Locksmithing (Paperback)

by Donald Streeter
