CARS: What was Pixar thinking?

I'm sorry, but am I the only one who thinks this movie is going to suck?

I'm sure it will make bucket loads of cash at the box office, but still.

Pixar has made such great movies in the past, but TALKING CARS? C'mon! It's like they just pulled this idea out of their arse.

It's different to have talking animals, or even toys. But Cars?

My kids have watched that show.
When I first saw the ad, I thought "They're doing an Auto B Good movie?" until I saw the whole thing. It's close enough that I wonder if there will be any lawsuits?

Pixar has a great record so far and I hope they keep it going with this film. But the 'Black Hole robot eyes' make me have my doubts. :scared:

Have you seen the cast list? There's some big names on that list -- Paul Newman, George Carlin, and some weird ones like Richard Petty and Larry the Cable Guy. I don't think they'd be able to get actors like that if the script sucked (well, Larry the Cable Guy would do it, but Newman and Carlin probably wouldn't...).

I bet they have a good script behind it.

17. I, too, fear that this will have all the charm and hilarity of Shark Tale
I'm very saddened by what I've seen in previews of this movie - I think it's gonna not only Pixar's first bad and ugly movie, but a way bad one. Their first movie that they should have deleted from the harddrive, subjected the drives to intense magnetic radiation, then smashed them into pieces.

But, one never knows. I will wait any real judgment until I see it.

I'm pessimistic but open-minded. Might make only half a ton of dough (off parents with kids) instead of full ton like Nemo etc.

I didn't see Shark's Tale as soon as I realized it wasn't by Pixar. Good thing too.

(Have a kid and the tv never leaves Disney).

One of the creators said that he grew up around Modesto and loved all the old cars. He also said that one of his favorite movies was American Grafitti and that he loves the glamour behind driving the entire length of Route 66. He said that he wanted to share a love of classic vehicles with this generation.

Rotten Tomatoes has it at an 81%.

27. After The Incredibles...
...I'm thinking that Pixar could make CGI talking turds entertaining.

I watched The Incredibles for the first time last week, and the DVD contained a preview of Cars. An unimaginative title, to be sure, but I was intrigued from the first moment (the magnificent texture on the rusty old truck above), and by the gritted-teeth-grilles on the speeding cars, and by the heat ripples rising from the track.

Also, giving Larry the Cable Guy a script might be the best way to make him funny. Appropriate voice casting for the aforementioned truck.

29. I thought Finding Nemo and The Incredibles were going to be stupid.
I'll never doubt Pixar again, until they finally fail.

I didn't like the previews for this one at first, but as they've gotten more detailed, I'm more intrigued. I'll see it. It can fall way below Pixar standards and still be better than most everything else out there.

And it's got Paul Newman. Would Paul Newman take a bad script? Or Larry the Cable Guy. Scratch that last sentence.

35. Making Steve Jobs the largest Disney shareholder

Steve Jobs:

Who only gives money to Democrats.
Who runs a company that offers the only real competition to an adjucated criminal monopolist.
Who runs a company that has the elected President in 2000, Al Gore, on its Board of Directors.

If Pixar makes it, I'll buy it. End of story.

but I'm sure it will make money.

I've loved about half of Pixar's output. The Incredibles, Monsters' Inc, and the Toy Story movies are wonderful. The talking animal movies (Finding Nemo, A Bug's Life) left me totally cold, although Nemo did have some incredible visuals in the coral reef scenes.

I guess that's more like 2 thirds than a half, but Cars looks to fall squarely into the Nemo/Bug camp.

47. Kind of like "My Mother the Car"???
http://www.tvparty.com/recmothercar.html

Outlandish as some of those series were, it was My Mother the Car that was destined to be held up in ridicule as one of the worst television series of all time.

NBC was the butt of innumerable jokes for airing the show in the first place - and leaving it there for an entire season. Still, 'My Mother the Car' was probably worth it to the network as fodder for 'Tonight Show' punchlines for the next three decades.

'My Mother The Car' followed the antics of lawyer Dave Crabtree (Jerry Van Dyke from 'Coach'), a typically hapless sitcom family man who discovers that his mother has returned from the grave as a 1928 Porter convertible automobile. It just so happens that he was looking around the used car lot for a family station wagon - on Mother's Day, no less - when he made this startling discovery.

He (naturally) buys the car against the wishes of his family, who (naturally) think he's gone crazy.

50. I saw 'Cars' today! It's good movie for everyone.
Looks to me like Pixar was thinking just fine to me. Pixar can do these films like no one else. I have seen a number of CGI movies over the last few years and I can't even remember some of them, I remember all of the Pixar films. They operate on an entirely different level.

It's a great flick with a little something for everyone. There's a somewhat more to the plot than what you see in trailers.

I give the film high recommendation. Check it out and enjoy yourself.
