The church girl is graduating
An old friend of mine from high school has a daughter that's graduating from high school soon. I only hear from him through e-mails every few months. We are not close. Our political views are exactly opposite, and we both know it. His daughter will be attending Liberty University in the fall. I received a graduation announcement. I bought her a card. Should I send her a gift/money?

1. Send her a gift certificate to Daytimers or Franklin Covey
She will likely need a nice day planner for college.

5. I figured you did not wish to give her money
which is why I suggested the day planner thing. Not much else can be bought at either Daytimers or Franklin Covey, other than planners and planner accessories. So no money would go to fundy things.

6. I'm sure she has everything she need for college already
so it has to be something else. Thanks for the idea though.

4. I want to do something for her
but I don't really want to give her any money. I could, but i'm not sure what she'd do with it.

9. How about a USB flash drive!
You can get a 512 MB drive for less than $30. And it may be something she does not already have.

12. Oh, that's what it is
I used one of those when I was in school too. Dumb me didn't even know what it was called. She will need one for college though. I know I did. I was scared to death it wouldn't work when I needed it. Yeah, I remember that. I should probably ask if she has one first. I'm sure her parents are sending her off with everything she needs already.

13. Do they even know what computers are at Liberty U?
Perhaps stone tablets are more in order. Or an abacus.

16. Gift certificates to restaurants?
If she leaves campus for school activities or to visit home she'd have the money to have a meal somewhere. And most restaurants won't allow them to be cashed in for money so she'd have to use it there.

I always give restaurant certificates. Some think it sound silly but the kids usually thank me over winter break.

14. How about a nice
book?

Not overtly liberal - but one that will get her THINKING, at least.

15. How about a phone
card! Just so you know most colleges supply students with day planners.

17. A card is fine
if you wish to send a gift or money, do so. But I'd recommend against specifically picking some sort of 'liberal' gift, as I think that's inappropriate. I don't like it when people buy me things they know I'm not going to like because they want to make me more like themselves, and I won't do it to others.
A gift card or cash is fine, but you can't control what she buys with it, and if you're really that concerned maybe just stick to the card by itself.
