http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8K-7bscb3c

I'm not sure if this was late 80s or very early 90s, but it's a great song and video regardless.

5. One of my favorite "lesser-knowns"...
Is DEVO's video for "Girl U Want".
http://rhino.com/retrovid/VideoKeeper.lasso?Artist=DEVO&Partner=

I'ts truly a visionary piece, IMHO.
They actually filmed it, but deliberately made it look
like it was a computer-generated work, compiled from
old B&W footage and then colorized.

Pretty impressive, seeing as how the CGI effect they
were imitating didn't exist yet!

On the flipside, the Vid of "Freedom of Choice" at that
same link might be a serious contender for the
"2nd Worst Ever" title.
(right after the absolute worst that popped up in the Lounge today)

203. Cars was '79, technically.
Hey, I saw him on the Exile tour in 199(6? 7?), and he ROCKED. It was still pretty synth-based, but he spent far more time behind lead guitar than keyboards. Jumping around like a 15 year old on speed! Best concert I've seen in years, and "Cars" was like the third song in the set. Once he'd performed the requisite "hit", he got right into the relatively obscure stuff: Fadeout 1930, Everyday I die, Films, Moral, Jo the Waiter, The Machmen, Absolution... You could tell how much he and the band (Paul Gardiner and two other original Tubeway Army members among them) were enjoying playing together live. It was a fantastic night (and in a venue that held, max, 700 people)!

Oh, and two of my friends ran into him shopping in Vancouver the day after the show and they took him to breakfast!

Did you know he gor into recording music because he couldn't make a living as as a sci-fi writer? He just took some of the premisees of his stories and set them to music. That's where "Down in the Park" and many of the others come from.

ARTIST: Robin Scott
TITLE: Pop Muzik
Lyrics and Chords

Pop, pop, pop muzik
Pop, pop, pop muzik

/ G - F - / :

Radio, video
Boogie with a suitcase
You're living in a disco
Forget about the rat race
Let's do the milkshake, you're selling like a hot cake
Try some, buy some, fee fie foe fum

Talk about pop muzik
Talk about pop muzik

Shoobie doobie do wop - I wanna dedicate it
Bop bop shoo wop - everybody made it
Shoobie doobie do wop - infiltrate it
Bop bop shoo wop - activate it

New York, London, Paris, Munich
Everybody talk about pop muzik
Talk about pop muzik
Talk about pop muzik
Pop, pop, pop muzik
Pop, pop, pop muzik

Sing it in the subway
Shuffle with a shoe shine
Mix me a Molotov
I'm on the hit line
Wanna be a gun slinger, don't be a rock singer
Eenie meenie miney moe, which-a-way you wanna go

Talk about pop muzik
Talk about pop muzik

Shoobie doobie do wop - right in between me
Bop bop shoo wop - me me me me
Shoobie doobie do wop - right in betweenie
Bop bop shoo wop - you know what I meanie
Hit it!

Now you know what to say
Talk about pop muzik
Talk about pop muzik
Pop, pop, pop muzik
Pop, pop, pop muzik

All around the world
Where ever you are
Dance in the street, anything you like
Do it in your car in the middle of the night
La la la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la la

Dance in the super mart
Dig it in the fast lane
Listen to the countdown
They're playing our song again
I can't get "Jumping Jack," I wanna hold "Get Back"
Moonlight Muzak, knick knack paddywhack

Talk about pop muzik
Talk about pop muzik

Shoobie doobie do wop - it's all around you
Bop bop shoo wop - they wanna surround you
Shoobie doobie do wop - it's all around you
Bop bop shoo wop - hit it!

I don't remember the name of the band or the song.

But it opened with this wide shot of a UFO landing in some field in the background with aliens coming down the ramp. Then this crazy looking alien guy pops up right in the foreground and scares the begeebers out of you. Then the rest of the video is stock footage of traffic moving in fast motion, with that same damn alien face popping up in the foreground every now and then. The music itself was forgettable.

Does anybody else remember that one?

34. Lionel Richie - 'Hello'

Hello, is it a really politically incorrect and cheesy video your looking for? Well, Lionel's your man. This #1 from 1984 featured a young blind lady, who was a student at the college where Mr Richie taught. Her hobby is to make clay heads of people (badly). Lionel becomes growingly attached to her, and dreams of kissing her lips 'a thousand times' (hey, there are laws against that sort of thing!). As his affection grows, he makes a crank call in the middle of the night to tell her 'Helloooooo! Is it me you're looking for!!!!', to which she surprisingly smiles at rather than dialling 911. It all ends with the blind student telling Mr Richie that she has made something for him. It's a clay head of a walrus! Actually, no its not, its of Lionel. C- for artistic merit, I'd say. They then embrace and presumably live happy ever after. Only a B-side of 'I can see clearly now the rain has gone' would have made the song in much worse taste...

Paddy MacAloon's got a superb voice.

I've put songs of theirs on mix tapes and gotten horrifying reactions. My wife, for instance, refuses to listen to anything they've ever done. SouthoftheBorderPaul hates them too.

Ah, subjectivity! :hi:

174. Question
where is this kind of music today? I owned this on cassette tape back in the day. All this stuff is so original...is anyone making this kind of cutting edge stuff in the alternative scene today...everything seems so genre oriented, and pop is so top heavy with celebutante franchises that straight ahead rock bands are marketed as 'alternative'.

I thank God I was around in the 80's and 90's when this stuff was going on...the late 80's was the heyday for alternative, thank God I didn't miss it.

272. thank you for posting those for me! this is a terrific thread
it's gotten kind of hard for me to navigate in because it's so big, but it's very enjoyable. you seem to have similar musical taste to me. you mentioned one georgia satellites song. have you ever checked out "love songs for the hearing impaired," which is dan baird's solo album? he seems to have been the brains of the operation, and every song is excellent. i listen to it all the time.

Asia's, 'The Smile Has Left Your Eyes' &

Moody Blues, "I Know You're Out there Somewhere"
They stick in my mind as being the two most tear-jerking videos I've ever seen, since or before. I really wish there was a place I could order a custom list of video's from the first coupla years when MTV acutally played videos.

Leave It

The band made multiple versions of this video: one of them had the band singing the entire song facing away from the camera. I think this was the "offical" version
of the video.

Not as surreal as Squeeze's "Hourglass" but it comes close.

688. How did we get here
And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful
Wife
And you may ask yourself-well...how did I get here?

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the moneys gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.

And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the moneys gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.

Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...

Water dissolving...and water removing
There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Carry the water at the bottom of the ocean
Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean!

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/in the silent water
Under the rocks and stones/there is water underground.

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the moneys gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.

And you may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
And you may ask yourself
Where does that highway go?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right? ...am I wrong?
And you may tell yourself
My god!...what have I done?

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/in the silent water
Under the rocks and stones/there is water underground.

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the moneys gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.

Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...

uploaded there.

It's like having MTV back the way it USED to be in the early 80s, when the played MUSIC VIDEOS. But even better--because there are no commercials, you can choose which videos you want, and you don't have to listen to Nina Blackwood.

194. I've become a YouTube junkie, too -
I haven't seen most of the videos I linked to in this thread since the early 80s.

The only current music video channel that even remotely resembles MTV back in the day (for me, from 81-88) is VH1 Classic, although that is but a shadow of the original.

MTV ruined my childhood!!!

196. Best theme song of the WHOLE DECADE: 99 Luftballoons - Nena
I can't believe any of us that grew up during the cold war and the Reagan nightmare are sane today. I used to have nightmares about nuclear holocaust on a regular basis...then there was the nuclear clock (2 minutes to midnight, remember that?) and "Testament" and "The Day After". Kids today have no freaking idea, terrorism or no....

221. A few I really like:
Two from Cabaret Voltaire:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FI8v3kfinG8&search=cabaret%20voltaire%20i%20want%20you

(Kirk and Malinder directed this one, based on their early experimentation with cut-up and Dada film-making. this time they shot original scenes involing emotional response, and at the same time, making an homage to Nosferatu and Shapes of Things to Come)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iywf7cY2Esg&search=sensoria

(notice the camera-crane technique those anti-plagiarists U2 "borrowed" years later)

Three from Ultravox:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LewZkp_oNTQ&search=ultravox

(a great, tongue-in-cheek adventure story as good as any from Hollywood, told with simple imagery, shot in two(!) days in an African game park and the parking lot of Luton Airport)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqQB19yx_i4&search=ultravox%20dancing

(the eighties summed-up in one video)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTJAdMtst8I&search=ultravox%20voice

(again, it's all in the camera work; the opening tracking shot in the lounge, etc. Obscure and obvious all at the same time, with the end resilt being a stylish, excessive overdose of arcane symbolism and silk suits.)

Three from the "Why, Miss Jones, you're beautiful!!" genre of video which has had a far, far deeper influence in my sexual tastes than I care to admit:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGOSfTjAei8&search=goody%20two%20shoes

(two drummers... that rocks!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJVwqKhaEbQ&search=hot%20for%20teacher

(Vegas was built for Diamond Dave)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQNC-SLG3lo&search=head%20over%20heels

(this one hasn't aged well, but it was shot in the U of Toronto Law Library (Osgoode Hall), and a friend of mine is in it.)

Some other faves:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dvc5ibmbcQ&search=rockit

(what's not to love about this?!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_WOzY8cYQc&search=duran%20chauffeur

(directed by Helmut Newton, no less!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NxTCk-o0U0&search=a-ha%20take%20on%20me

(I saw this recently spoofed on Family Guy and I nearly had a heart-attack!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXZhpduVCjs&search=dear%20god%20xtc

(just brutally in your face)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwW9L_qzqp8&search=metallica%20one

(more of the bleak, please, from when these guys didn't suck)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tZO94Mhfzk&search=replacements%20bastards%20of%20young

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0P8owDk24DE&search=two%20tribes

One of the great songs of the 80s that nobody seems to remember. More people I know know it from the opening credits of Donnie Darko than from its' original release.

started in the early seventies and ended in 1981. by the time it ended it had degenerated into disco heaven, but i saw the first video i ever saw on there -- for queen's "bohemian rhapsody." they had some great rock bands on there, lip synching!

has anybody mentioned two great videos by golden earring, "twilight zone" and "when the lady smiles." i don't know if they did a video for "radar love." if they did i never saw it.

and they've turned out to be one of my favorite bands playing such classics as, 'Don't Turn Out Like Your Mother' and "Oh, Jean" an ode to the first gal he got lucky with.

In all seriousness though, they're a very socially conscious band and have serious, sometimes despairing songs about life in Scotland.

SOMEone needs to get a better copy of it. All of the satellite glitches at the end where the song skips and goes block-like, it just ruins it. There should be a rule that if the whole song is not at least viewable it shouldn't be posted.

And love love love
Is a dangerous drug
You have to receive it
And you still cant
Get enough of the stuff

Its savage and its cruel
And it shines like destruction
Comes in like the flood
And it seems like religion
Its noble and its brutal
It distorts and deranges
And it wrenches you up
And youre left like a zombie

And I want you
And I want you
And I want you so
Its an obsession

Michael Anthony does a pretty good Belushi Samurai. But the video was dull and cheesy as hell.

I never did "get" David Lee Roth. I liked the songs they did, but all his video ideas were just...weird.

733. Y'know, people rag on him for being trite, but Adams had some
awesome tunes back in the day.

I still remember our AOR station in Iowa used to play his live version of "Take Me Back" which was something like 8 or 9 minutes long, had a long monologue in the middle, a certain expletive screamed that anyone that's ever been dumped can relate to.

"Cuts Like a Knife" and "You Want It, You Got It" are a couple of great albums.

"Reckless" got seriously overplayed in the 80s on MTV and radio, but some great tunes nevertheless.

739. Yeah, your right, he does have some chops.....
....but what irritates the hell out of me is that I get the impression that he would eat box of light bulbs if it would help him get a hit record.

That hideous tune he did for the "Robin Hood" soundtrack clinched it for me.

734. Yep, I posted that one in #23 above. But it's so good it deserves
a reprise.

Wasn't Charlie Sexton like 16 years old when he recorded this album?

Great band from Colorado.

On edit: I guess they're more of a 1990s band, but still a nice memory trip.

Yes, it's not technically a 1980s release, but it's a part of the soundtrack to the 80s.
