Saw Something on TV last night that is just wrong on SO many levels...
Was watching The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and he had David Lee Roth on. Diamond Dave did "Jump" but it was not right.

He did it with a bluegrass band. That is just wrong, wrong, wrong, WRONG!!! Think I am kidding...

That is the album. They were pick'n and grin'n, it was so sad. Some things just don't go together, and Diamond Dave, Van Halen, and Bluegrass are one.

OK I am off my soap box.

2. Austin Lounge Lizards did a speed-bluegrass version of "Brain Damage"
Pink Floyd never sounded so good.

Plus: Hilarious

17. Speaking of Pink Floyd
I'll be seeing both Roger Waters doing his "Dark Side of the Moon" set this summer - and lo and behold, on the same day (it's a music festival) Scissor Sisters will be performing on another stage. Should be interesting to hear "Comfortable Numb" twice :D

3. So basically he's ripping off Hayseed Dixie
Edited on Fri Jun-09-06 01:21 PM by giant_robot
Hayseed Dixie is a bluegrass band that covers AC/DC tunes. They are incredible. I'll bet Van Halen would be good as bluegrass tunes, if done right.

12. Ever heard Luther Wright and the Wrongs?
Edited on Fri Jun-09-06 01:50 PM by Oeditpus Rex
They did an entire CD, "Rebuild the Wall," that's a bluegrass cover of "The Wall."

Great stuff.

Edit to add: And the Waybacks have a tune called "Mind Your Own Business" that, done live, morphs into some funky pickin' and grinnin' and ultimately into an acoustic version of "Purple Haze" — but with the lyrics from the "Green Acres" theme.

4. That's so sad
Dave showed up on yesterday's The Daily Show in a segment called "Slow News Day" because he had been on Fox News for an incredible 6 minutes of wasted air time. Poor Dave, still looking for a career.

5. Your link is useless
as it doesn't provide a sound clip as far as I could see... or rather, HEAR.

11. That's so cool. Listen to Eruption and I'll Wait. Those really work.
The ones Dave sings on work least well of any of 'em. Good to hear him back in the game though.

15. The clip was too short...
no hook. I do understand your chagrin, but the track is well within in a long-standing tradition of re-interpretation.

Not on my Must Have list, mind you, but an interesting and profitable experiment.

16. Frankly I thought it was better than the original
There were some heavy hitters on the stage with Diamond Dave: Rob Ickes on dobro, Brad Davis on guitar, Stuart Duncan on fiddle. I'm still trying to figure out who the banjo player was.

Of course, this episode pissed off the Bluegrass Nazis, i.e., the "purists" who think if Monroe didn't do it, it shouldn't be done. Jack Lawrence (guitarist with Doc Watson), however, shut everybody up by proclaiming: "Obviously some of you don't know what it's like to try to make a living playing music."

So let's see: would I rather sweat my balls off playing for the lawn chair set at a summertime bluegrass festival, or do a guest shot on national TV on the Tonight Show? Wow, that's a tough one....
