How long do you keep the "original packaging" ?

Poll question: How long do you keep the "original packaging" ?

I bought a sound card from Zipzoomfly. They require you to return a defective product in its original package. I had it working fine so I took the packaging to the dump. The next day I smelled overheated electronics coming from my computer. How long do all of you retain product packaging?
It seems like I am going have a hard time getting this thing fixed. All I want is a card that works. Repaired/replaced doesn't make any difference to me.
