1. I saw Yngwie in concert once, opening for Dio. He was awful.

One of the most boring opening shows I've ever seen (but not as awful as The Vinnie Vincent Invasion). I kind of liked his albums, and owned a couple of them (though I couldn't listen to them for long periods).

He's a hell of a fast player, and he knows his Bach well. I'll give him that.

But for fuck's sake, shredding sucks after about 8 bars.

I want to hear a guitarist play with soul, and play with some variation between fast and slow, loud and soft, and with some rhythmic variation and syncopation.

Goddamn, an hour of constant 64th notes tires pretty fucking fast.

2. I'm going to second here
Malmsteen is very talented, like Steve Vai on crack, but still as stated, fast is good, shredding good and fingertapping up the neck is nice...but there's more to it.

I'm with Rabrrrrrr on the "play with soul..." etc, here.

3. I recognize Stevie Ray's talent
But I never could get into him. I really don't get into the blues unless it's pre-1950. The blues seems tired and worn out now. But maybe I just need to get turned on to the right musicians. Probably players that don't get a lot of air time.

4. Seek, and you will find.
My favorite blues guitarists are Mississippi Fred MacDowell and Lightnin' Hopkins. Seek out the blues labels and lose yerself.

SRV was more than blues. The funk and rock aspects drove his music to other places. Live, his rhythym and leads were so well integrated it just became something else. It was ecstatic. Every show I saw got better.

Dammit.
