8. That's crazy
The original degrassi did:
drunk driving (wheels parents died)
adoption (another wheels storyline)
rape
sexual abuse
teen pregnancy
pollution, animal testing, and other social responsibility
racism
sexism
homophobia (snakes brother is gay)
abusive parents
drinking
drugs
shoplifting

Just to name a few. In the 80s. Man it was good.

everything is pretty much back to normal, lol!

im pretty stressed at work. I really shouldn't be playing on this thing, but too many fun people to chat with (present company definitly included) makes for good distraction. Im gearing up to return to school in August and I finally get to register on 6/15. I hope my the classes im going to take will still be open :scared:

9. That Joey Jeremiah really burned me up.
Caitlin deserved a much better boyfriend, and Wheels and Snake certainly deserved a better friend.

I still hum the Zit Remedy's greatest hit, I will admit ("Everybody wants somethin', so never give up . . .). Later they changed their name to the Zits and got crappier.

31. She is
Sue Johanson. I worked with her on sex ed workshops and in different programs. She's a freaking legend. She's been doing different talk shows and working with people about sex for, well, it seems like forever.
Smart, sassy, straight forward, no beating around the bush. I think she probably saved 2 or 3 generations of Canadian teens and young adults from STIs, pregnancy, and emotional issues single handedly.

She is a woman to be revered. I absofuckinglutly LOVE her. She deserves a friggin nobel prize.

No need to go THAT far.

It's from the episode where Stephanie gets drunk and can't give her speech as School President at the big homecoming dance, and she pukes in the bathroom.

Oh, I also think Spike goes into labour in that episode.

12. Degrassi Junior High was one of my guilty pleasures in the 1980s
I was already an adult, but the show was easy to get hooked on in the way that a well-written soap opera is.

I don't like The Next Generation at all. The cast is smaller, and the plots are less interesting. After I saw what Spike, Snake, and Joey looked like grown-up, I lost interest.

what cracks me up is that, on the new one, they won't show (in the U.S.) the "Manny Has an Abortion" episode and yet they show all of the original shows...which were far more advanced.

I remember Aaron Spelling tried to buy the rights and got a no dice, so he started that "other" teenaged drama. Degrassi was real. The kids looked, acted and were real.

34. Did you know that
most of the kids (back to Kids Of Degrassi St) were not actors, and most of them had never acted before. Also, when they got older, they hired in some cases their family members. It felt so real because it WAS, they just used real kids and had them act like... themselves.

You can download the episodes if you're missing some. Communist Broadcasting Corporation wont sue you ;)

41. I was a huge Degrassi fan, even though I was 19 when I first saw it.
I was impressed with how well they addressed such controversial issues. I'm such a dumbhead, that it took me several episodes to figure out it was set in Canada. Then it became clear why the show was so good; it never would have made it past American network standards and practices. I had a bit of a crush on Caitlin, and was pissed that Joey was such a jerk to her.
