Through the doors is a large, mostly empty hall. The walls are white and the carpet is an unassuming brown tone. A long wooden conference table is in the foreground of the hall. On each side are wooden shelves of books. And across the back wall is a huge red velvet curtain.

As Junker opens the curtain, the display slowly emerges.

Hitler's face stares back from two large photos. One sits atop a pedestal that will soon hold a bust of Hitler, Junker said. It's a dashing young Hitler in his SS uniform, swastika on his left arm sleeve. The other, much larger portrait is a close-up face shot. It sits in front of the pedestal on a large black box.

Federal law says that people from the criminal groups identified at Nuremberg cannot immigrate to the U.S. unless they can prove that their unit was not involved in any atrocities. While many, and possibly the majority of, Waffen SS soldiers were involved in war crimes, there were a substantial number who simply served as combat soldiers alongside the Wehrmacht in WWII. They didn't commit war crimes and are legally no different than any other German citizen.

If this guy was in one of the Waffen SS units that wasn't a part of any of the atrocities, and if he still had his deployment papers to prove it, he wouldn't have had any problems moving to the U.S. Interestingly, if that is true it might also explain his twisted view of Hitler...if he wasn't present at any of the atrocity sites, he may have been genuinely unaware of the concentration camps like much of the rest of the German populace. His experience in the SS may conflict with history simply because of his particular deployments.

I'd LOVE to know where this guy spent the war.

That was truly fascinating.

Even bearing in mind

that there was a huge distinction between the mainly combat troops of the Waffen (literally "weapons") SS and the Totenkopft (literally "death's head") SS who guarded the concentration camps Junker could not fail to be unaware of the Einzatzgruppen.

These roving groups were responsible for approximately 1.5 million deaths of Jews and numerous other Untermenschen.

When I was a kid, we had a former German Wehrmacht soldier living next door. The guy had been awarded the Iron Cross for bravery, and served in North Africa under Rommel until he was captured and shipped to a POW camp in the South. He liked the U.S. so much that he immigrated here after the war ended :)

He was not a denier by any means, and fully accepted the reality of what the Nazi's had done in Germany. As he pointed out though, he and the soldiers with him had no idea what was happening at the time. When the war started, he was among the first soldiers to enter France and once they'd surrendered his unit was relegated to patrol duty in the relatively quiet eastern part of the country. When the Afrika Corps were formed, his unit was rolled into them and he went to Africa to fight the British and Americans. As he explained, the newspapers didn't report on the roundups, the radio stations were all controlled by the government and never spoke of these things, and as a matter of security troops were never told where other units were being deployed to. He had no idea that Jews were being gassed until the war ended, simply because he hadn't been anywhere near any of the atrocity sites.

If this could be true of a Wehrmacht soldier, why not a Waffen?

Your Heer neighbour therefore spent the bulk of the war away from Europe, and as you say, away from the scenes of atocity. Your standard issue SS Soldat can't make that claim.

They absolutely swear to what this guy writes. During the war, several small European countries were allied with Germany because their devil was Russia and Stalin who was as bloody a murderer as Hitler. I guess your loyalty just depended on who killed YOUR family members.
