16. I don't have a digital camera or scanner, but...
I was fascinated by Pipa (or Surinam) toads when I saw them in a film about a tributary of the Amazon River called the Rio Negro, so called because it is very dark due to tannin from leaves , but its water is clear.
So I googled images of Pipa and found this photo, with a good description-
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FRIDAY, 1 JANUARY 1999
The Year of the Toad

Went to Blijdorp zoo with Loes and was completely captivated by this beautifully ugly creature... Pipa pipa (common name: Surinam Toad). The photograph doesn't do the beast justice. Face to face it is a far stranger sight. Corpse-like it hangs motionless in its tank with its flattened and bleached body, flat triangular head and miniscule peppercorn eyes. It looks every bit like a piece of roadkill that someone has kicked back into the ditch.
It gets stranger. The female's eggs (attached to her back as in the photograph) disapppear--are completely covered over by skin within hours of being fertilized. Maturation and the tadpole stage occurs subcutaneously, and after 3 or 4 months minature adults emerge. In the Natural History Museum in Bergen Norway (visited January 1996) I saw a female specimen (preserved in formaldehyde) with dozens of little heads and arms poking from her skin. It just goes to show that life on earth can be as madly exotic as the best StarTrek episode.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When I first saw this film I thought "how odd, if humans were like Pipa toads, we would go to a dermatologist instead of an obstetrician!"

Is Ashley feeling better now?

How is your friend, after 30? 40? years of not seeing her?

And MOST important of all, did you enjoy your date with Harvey? I sure did, yesterday. :9

I'm so glad you had an AWESOME time!

40. ahh Harvey , whatta HAMburger he is hehe
and Swiss Chalet TWICE! gotta love that place.
Ashley is feeling much better, she's virtually pain free now, still taking an antibiotic but looking SO much better and getting some energy back. Now if they could just resolve some of their relationship issues  kids, having kids, y'know? :(

It was a lot of fun seeing my friend after 40 years, we reminisced, laughed and even cried over the loss of parents and other family. It was like we have really not been apart for all that time. Time flew and they are now back home in Scotland, perhaps we'll go there in 2008 after we get all of our renovations done here.

Have you been back to Scotland (you were born there, correct?) since you left as a youngster?

That's amazing; obviously you two have a very special bond! Sounds like you want to keep in touch.

Good luck to your son (don't know his name!) and Ashley. I hope they work hard at it and are committed. My sister eloped at 17 with her fiancee, who was 22, back in 1970. In 1971, they had a daughter (yes, I was an auntie at age 4), and eventually a son came a few years later.

35 years later, they're still together. It was a rough road for them, but they were totally committed. They still love each other very much.

They're also an anomaly, I know.

Stunning pics, auntieA!! Absolutely beautiful!:applause:

I miss the Falls so much. I grew up in Mississauga, and had a relative who lived in NF, so we used to go and visit every couple of weeks or so. I haven't been there for at least 17 years now.

Just spectacular, aren't they? :loveya:

My Dad lives there, we were able to visit him also. The lights at night on the falls are incredible, sadly those pictures didn't turn out. We got soaked when the wind picked up and sent a very wet mist our way

Edited on Tue Jun-13-06 12:17 AM by Godhumor
Adding this picture because it is such a great fusion between traditon and environment. This is a scene from the conclusion of a tea ceremony lesson where the student (in Pink) is bowing in respect to the tea master (the non-bowing figure). I just love the juxtaposition of the figures with the amazing natural growth in the background.

Incidentally, the student is now my wife.
