Death in the garden - graphic dial up warning.

The first sunflower to bloom has given up:


Here is where the stalk gave up:


The path the pest took can be seen here near the soil:


I think this is where the pest (I suspect the sunflower stem weevil) entered the plant:


I'm wondering if the bumps on the stem indicate the presence of pests:


The insides of the stem clearly show the damage:


I hope the rest of my sunflowers survive:

9. Take a sample of the damaged stalk,roots, etc.

to your nearest nursery and ask them what you can do
to prevent this from spreading.

I always ask if they can recommend something that is earth-friendly.
i.e. not so damn toxic and unsafe to use around pets.

They might be able to help you.

The bastids. I spread a cayenne paste on the stems to slow them down
