Whatever happened to "artists"? Are they obsolete?
I'm talking about the painting kind.

(Puts on old man wig)

When I was a boy, we had Picasso and Dali and Warhol and Haring and Basquiat and...

Okay, I haven't really thought this out, but why don't we hear anymore about contemporary visual artists who are making waves in the big cities and why aren't they grabbing all the Arts section headlines?

Did they die out after the 80s? No one seems to care about static two-dimensional art anymore.

Don't mind me. Just a semicoherent quasi-rant from someone who's never been to NYC or any other major art centre.

Dana Schutz is a young painter who's becoming very, very famous, just to name one. It's North America, it's not like Europe where people pay this stuff much attention, outside of NYC, anyway. In my city's paper, the "Arts" section focuses mostly on TV, bestselling novels and Hollywood movies.
