ACL Recovery - What a pain in the ass....
OK back whenI was 21 I tore my ACL. I had a patellar knee graft, and all was good. Recovery was a pain in the ass then, and it took me 6 months before I was good again.

Fast forward 10+ years. I go jogging, and head up the stairs. Crunch - OWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW! - doubled over.

I tear it again. So on Wednesday, June 7th (the day before my b-day) I have surgery. It took me this long just to clear the haze from the anasthesia, and I'm on crutches, and every time I stand all the blood rushes to my knee and pain alongside it.

No gym, no movement, no idea how I'm going to drive.

Arggggh...

1. My dear Taverner.....
I am so sorry to hear it......

It seems as though the most active people have the worst, most debilitating injuries that take the longest time to recover from......

And while they're recovering, they are so angry about it...

Hope you can cope....and hope that you have some help with getting around as well!

4. Yes - the inactivity is the worst
Not being able to start my morning off with triple strength coffee and a workout is killing me...

2. I'm no anatomist, but if it's a pain in the ass, you must've torn it badly
I mean, doesn't it start in your knee?

Anyway, I hate injured knee stories. You have my symapthy, along with the sympathetic ache you're forcing me to feel behind my patella.

7. The injury that caused this happened when I was going up the stairs
My wife and toddler were in the room, and toddler was watching Sesame Street, at full volume.

Suddenly, on like the second stair, my knee went out and I felt (and heard) it crunch. My wife jumped out of her seat and yelped, as she saw me double over in pain. Even the toddler was like "What's that dadeeeeeeeeeee??"

It was the sound of the cartiledge on both bones rubbing against each other...

8. If it had happened in the forest, would it have made a sound?
My grandfather once tore through his calf muscle while descending the steps to his basement. He described it as "like a windowshade, but it hurt more."

Anyway, I hate your story! Ouch!

6. I had three reconstructions (on the same knee)
Tore it the first time skiing. I am a very active person and seem to get beat up by my sports quite a bit.

9. I had a congenitial knee disorder
Edited on Tue Jun-13-06 03:43 PM by Sgent
which involved rearranging all my tendons (shortening, reattaching in different places), etc.

The surgery sucks, the rehab sucks more.

Good luck, and hopefully its just a tear rather than a detachment.

19. Oh, the drama of it all!
"Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

I'm utilizing that one as my personal anthem for the aging process.

18. Check out the Kneeboard
If you can tear yourself away from DU for a few minutes, you might want to check out the Kneeboard, if you haven't already. It's an online community message board for people with ACL problems. It's a good place to share advice and complaints.
