SALEM -- A Salem man was charged yesterday with his 13th drunken driving offense.
Leonard Levasseur, 55, who was arraigned in Salem District Court yesterday morning, has been arrested and convicted 12 times on drunken-driving related charges, according to Salem police prosecutor Conrad J. Prosniewski. His charges date back to 1970.
Most recently, Levasseur served a two-year sentence for one of the convictions in 2002.
``The only way to keep him from driving is to put him in jail," said Prosniewski. ``This guy just doesn't listen. If they let him out, he's going to drive."
Levasseur, who is unemployed, is being held without bail. Prosecutors said a hearing is scheduled for Tuesday to determine if he is a dangerous person, which could result in a 90-day mandatory jail sentence.
At the dangerousness hearing, three Salem police officers will testify about their experiences with Levasseur on the road.
Levasseur was arrested about 11 a.m. Monday on Lafayette Street, a busy main thoroughfare, in Salem after police saw him driving erratically and recognized him.
