What are some movies everyone hated but that you think rule?
Edited on Thu Jun-15-06 01:23 AM by BlueIris
Hey, if yurbud gets to re-up the other list, I get to re-up mine.

My submission: a little-known Annabella Sciorra/Jamie Farr/Alan Alda film called "Whispers in the Dark" from 1992 that is a) not that horrible and b) 1,000 times better than most of what has been in theaters this year. It was successfully suspenseful and intriguing without being contrived, the plot was actually quite original and believable, I think, and I had to admire the fact that Alda agreed to be in it even though it meant he was cast so entirely against type that it made the twist at the end of that film just unpleasant to behold. Which is another thing: great scenery, which evoked the mood flawlessly. And, seriously? I'm still desperate to find a copy of that soundtrack, because the score for that film was beautiful. Can't find a review of it anywhere that went above two stars.

1. Sin City
I am a bit of a comic geek, and I think, Frank Miller is a gifted writer/artist, but most of the people I know, think Sin City sucked. I on the other hand, thought the movie was fantastic, and the black/white aspect of the film, was amazing...

42. I will never look at trophy heads the same way again!
I didn't get much of the movie, but I did think the visual technique of filming it was way cool.

It was far too violent for me, and I couldn't follow the plot well.

24. i think its popularity has grown over time
so maybe now not everybody hates it, but it really got hammered by critics on its theatrical release. It is a hilarious movie, though :toast: (and at times, surprisingly beautiful)

"It's okay, he's just admiring the shape of your skull."

"Who said anything about slicing you up, man? I just wanted to carve a little 'z' in your forehead."

45. I have to agree.
I was a major fan of the book when I was in high school, and when Gilliam made a movie of it a few years alter, I HAD to see it in the theatres. So I dropped a couple hits of acid, drank a six pack of Dos Equis, and popped some trucker's speed, and went to see it with some friends. AND I LOVED IT. I would have been so dispoointed had it been unfaithful to the book ala "Where the Buffalo Roam," but Gillam's vision and Thomspon's madness dovetailed nicely. If only for the first twenty minutes alone, I thought it was a masterpiece.

I was just as baffled by the dimal reviews. Like, "did this asshole see a different movie?!" baffled.

rip-off, but it was one of the only ones I liked (except "Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead," which I thought at least had decent dialogue). Denis Leary was so cute in "Suicide Kings."

19. I love that movie
It'd be wonderful if there's a longer cut out there somewhere. It reminds me of the Prince Valiant comic strip with it's revelations about European history during the Dark Ages. The juxtaposition of so many different cultures is something that we were never taught about in school.

49. They cut it down for DVD
I remember seeing a scene with them on the water in the theater, that was cut out of the Video release. I know that often happens, but it made me wonder what else was slashed down.

Definately a favorite movie of mine. A fantasy film with an Arab hero. As an Arab, I'm sold...even if the part is played by a Spaniard.

Beautifully skewers the Southern California lifestyle (though my brother lives there so I know not everyone there is that shallow) plus has a couple brought together by a magical traffic sign. What's not to like?

25. The David Lynch one, or the other one?
I like them both. The David Lynch one took some awful liberties with the book, but still ended up with a very cool movie stylistically and artistically. The Sci-Fi channel's version was closer to the book, and much longer so it got more into the good stuff, but iddn't manage the grandioseness of the Lynch film. Still a very good movie, though.

'The Boy Who Could Fly' and 'The Last Supper'

The second one is not so much hated by my peers, but simply unknown. The first one, almost every friend I have says it's too cheesey and sappy (but most of my friends don't like films unless it's actually rebelling against something), but it's one of my favorite films and although it actually is cheesey and sappy, I still well up a bit at the last shot.

72. Shining Through.
The one with Melanie Griffith that won her a Razzie for worst actress. I can watch that one over and over again for some reason. :)

75. She...they...a Razzie?!
But her performance there was actually one of the only Melanie Griffith ones I can stand. A Razzie? That is so mean.

I like that film, too, because my beloved Swiss are represented with dignity and accuracy. It's weird it should be mentioned in this thread, I was just thinking about it the other day. I haven't watched it in years and I was wondering why--oh, right, because stories about fascism were entertaining until fascism was a part of my daily reality in my own nation. I just--that one scene...

"And I confess, except for you, I have no use for Jews."

Shudder.

74. Slacker. (Singular. Not "Slackers" the kid's soccer movie!)
It's Richard Linklater's first movie - and one of my favorite films of all time.

But most people who try to watch it either don't finish it or if they do they say, "That gave me a headache."
