my Carobon Monoxide Detector has gone off twice recently....
both times after or when I was using my (gas) oven. I have the plug-in type that goes directly into the outlet (no batteries).

I opened my doors and windows immediately... but got scared. I know CO has no odor; there has been a kind of bad smell when my oven heats up, recently. I had used the broiler a few weeks ago and I think some grease splattered up (?) or maybe something (plastic ?) from a pot or pan melted inside. I don't know.

Any idea where CO might be coming from? The ones upstairs (bedrooms) have not, just the downstairs one.

1. I don't know
but to be on the safe side, why don't you call the gas company. I'm sure they'd send someone out to check.

2. You need to get a repair person in ASAP
Probably something is blocking the oven's exhaust fumes from getting out of the house. http://www.epa.gov/iaq/pubs/coftsht.html Here's the part that especially bears on your situation: http://www.epa.gov/iaq/pubs/coftsht.html#A%20Few%20Words%20About%20CO%20Detectors

4. How old is your CO detector?
The all have specific lifespans (the Americium isotope used in most detectors has about a 5-10 year half life).

Of course, calling the gas company works, but if you don't smell GAS, then actually it's not their issue, them dealing with leaks. They might charge you money; ask.

The "bad smell" could be the SO2 spiked in the gas; depends on what it smells like. Burning grease, plastic, etc sets of SMOKE detectors, seldom CO detectors.

Hope that helps.

5. thanks- it's about 3 years old
I just called my gas company (PSE&G)- the operator said they wouldn't charge to "come to my house"-- let's see. They'll be here "within the hour". I hope that they don't shut off my gas and give me a violation (about 2 years ago, my husband thought he smelled gas in the basement where the boiler is, and that's what happened.)
