To The Owner Of The OUTDOOR Tabby Cat Living Around Rt. 9 In MA...........
Edited on Thu Jun-15-06 05:23 PM by matcom
yes you. the cute tabby cat with the bright pink collar on?

your cat lost half her fucking FACE 30 minutes ago when it was clipped by a car. i SAW your cat as i passed the two other cars who already had stopped with their flashers on to help as YOUR precious cat (with the cute pink collar) was crouched down in the right hand lane whipping her tail in pain.

don't worry about her, she was alive. of course the blood pouring out of her fucking BRAIN was creating quite a pool on the road. i do believe her right eye was laying in that pool. the good Samaritans who stopped will probably pick that up too and take it to the animal hospital along with your precious, purring pet.

if she doesn't make it, know that she died violently but happy as she was allowed to roam free in the great outdoors (like she was "MEANT" to).

:eyes:

on edit: if you are pissed this title didn't have a warning, i'm sorry. no warning was given for a specific reason. if you are shocked at the description of what I witnessed, imagine MY shock at witnessing it (as the owner of 2 beautiful cats myself). you can help spread the word about the dangers of letting fluffy run "free" either to your friends and neighbors or through your local animal shelter. thank you.

4. Thank you for the PSA.
As an owner of two indoor cats though, I wish this could have had a warning added. :(

8. I completely understand.
That's something I wouldn't want to have to mentally re-visit either, having seen my own share...I'm sorry that happened. I'm even more sorry for the tabby with the thoughtless owners.

5. she might actually live
cats are resilient that way.

this is very sad though. very sad.

it's possible that she may be an inside cat and just slipped outside unnoticed. how terrible.

what drives me crazy where I live is that people run over animals on purpose here, especially cats. They will swerve out of their way to hit a cat. I have seen two puppies on the road I live on that I am certain were run over on purpose. People are sick.

7. Matcom....thanks for reminding us that cats kept indoors
live much longer than those who are allowed to roam freely. I have a co-worker who has a 21 year old CAT.

My cat is 15 soon to be 16.

10. I've tried to talk to people about letting their cats roam free...falls on
deaf ears. :( I really pissed off a lady who lives at the apartment complex. My mother was within earshot and she said, "Well, you can't keep them indoors ALL the time." I pointed out that a friend takes hers outside on leashes. The neighborhood lady wasn't pleased at all. I think my mom felt insulted because she's taken over two of the cats in her neighborhood and they are never indoors.

No one keeps their cats indoors here. It just isn't done. Folks look at me like I'm some kind of infectious agent when I suggest it, yet boohoo and moan over the county's horrible feral cat problem. Kittens are being put down like crazy at the pound this time of year and I noted that the neighbors across the way haven't snipped their orange tabby's little balls yet. He's almost big enough to impregnate a female.

I've thought about adopting a kitten, but in my current state of health, I just can't. It makes me sad to think that a lot of suffering could be alleviated by cat owners simply keeping their pets indoors or on leashes. They don't belong in the ecology here. Foxes and similarly-sized native wildlife need to fill that niche.

11. I have a sad outdoor cat story
When my husband opened our RV up this season, he noticed there was no evidence that we'd had any mice on it this past winter. This is unusual.

Then he saw it. A dead cat. It had apparently somehow gotten into the RV over the winter (the same way as the mice?) and gotten trapped, and at some point died of dehydration, or starved, or froze to death, or something.

I have no idea whose cat it was. It was a big tom cat that had been hanging out in our yard for a while. Before we had our ccat spayed, he spent a great deal of time in our yard peering in our windows.

12. Thank goodness some folks stopped.
Hopefully they'll get her taken care of.

Bollocks on the folks if they just let her roam, and double bollocks on those that didn't stop.

17. That is so sad.
My two kitties stay indoors, and they're fine. They have a kitty condo to climb on, and play with each other. And of course they are both spayed. No need to let them out and take a chance on something like this happening.

My friend once wrote a very touching story called 'Heaven for people that no one loved'

It had a very sad-happy ending.

19. how horrible
yes it was graphic, but I think it was something that needed to be said.

both of my cats are indoors. I see how people drive here in this neighborhood. and some people here let their dogs roam free.

I love my furbabies too much to let them outside. Too risky.

21. funny. when i have made this rant in the past
it has ended up with over 100 posts with people yelling at each other that "Cats NEED to be outside! They are HUNTERS by NATURE! They DESERVE to run free!" :eyes:

20 posts since yesterday. Hhhhhmmmmmm

methinks the usual suspects don't have much to say over THIS thread

22. i believe the average lifespan of cats in this country
is remakably low because people let their cats live outside.

i hate seeing things like that -- and it's a disservice to the cat that the owner is responsible for -- it's easier to let them outside -- but not safer.

24. That is just awful. A similar thing happened here this week.
A friend of mine came upon a sweet Jack Russell terrier standing over its dead companion. They had escaped from someone's back yard when the kids left the gate open.

They didn't have collars, but my friend took the live pet home and gave it to his wife who drove back with it to the neighborhood where it happened to try to find the owners. She did. Happy ending.

He said he was really traumatized by the sight of that sweet little dog mourning his companion.

26. Not all cats are meant to live indoors; not all are meant to live outdoor
I can't explain what happened with that one particular cat; however, what you have determined is the best course of action doesn't mean that applies across the board. My grandparents always had cats on their properties that lived for years without any problem but then again they lived in very rural Pennsylvania. My parents share an outdoor cat with their next door neighbor (it was a stray found). When the couple goes to work during the day, the cat runs across the properties to my parents house and spend the day there. Of course there are no highways between the two properties.

Me? I have no choice but to leave my cats indoor because there are too many strays and too many asshole kids that could have a bad affect on my cats. Perhaps Evita could survive outdoors since she's already lived the life of a stray cat but Abbott wouldn't survive a day.

So your story was harsh and perhaps might make a few cat owners think about the living arrangements with their pets. But ultimately I don't think anyone here has the right to judge what is best for someone's cat.
