Well I am going to be up all night.

Severe storm had straight line winds in it. They were over 70 MPH, probably a lot higher. It blew 2 65' metal power poles that cross Interstate 20 in Big Spring, TX. down. Those poles had our main Fiber line for one area of town on it, it was ripped into in two places, as well as all the power lines for the area. They have the poles in place and shut the interstate down for both directions at 1 AM and are hanging the power lines. So in about 3 hours from then My guys can get to the poles and put up the fiber and then splice all that in. So by maybe 6 AM or 7 AM I can go to bed. This is turning into a bad weekend to be on call. *YAWN*

3. They are very powerful winds
that come in at a straight line rather than a cyclone pattern.

They can be equally as damaging as a tornado.

5. Thanks....
I don't think we have them here in Seattle. I'd never heard of them until last week when someone posted about them.

9. As rain falls through a cloud it cools the air.
Edited on Sat Jun-17-06 02:22 AM by texas1928
During the summer and with hot temperatures in the surrounding air, like we are right now. The rain falling cools that air drastically. Cool air sinks, so that rain-cooled air falls to the surface it hits the ground like a bomb and explodes out in all directions. It races along the ground at very high speeds. So it is wind that pretty much travels in one direction along the ground. It can do lots of damage very quickly and then it is gone. Some downbursts blowing out of storms can create new storms as it gets out into warm moist air in front of the storms already built.

7. It is Fiber lines of ours. It feeds cable to about 1400 customers.
So I am in charge of monitoring the system, and taking care of those techs that are out there if they need assistance. So I have to be up in case they need me.
