How long did it take you to restore them?

4. It depends.
All needed cleaning and the decals on all needed to be matted down. These that are complete needed only a few parts re-attached. The ones awaiting have a little more damage or replacement parts need to be hunted down! It averaged about one to two days per model though.

It's turning into a fun summer project! :)

15. My dear djeseru!
Wow, you did a wonderful job! Kudos, sweetie!

Were they in disrepair from long storage under un-optimal conditions?

These look like they just came out of their original boxes!

I am also surprised at how well they look - the decades just cleaned right off. Admittedly, I had kept them in storage too long.

...mine as well. I didn't know they were my dad's favorites either until I unpacked these back in January. There's still four more P-51s awaiting the cement...

22. Boxes are pretty.
I had a small collection of a few boxes too, but mostly WWII-era aircraft. I've found that I like the restoration/cleaning better than actual construction though!

I don't work well right out of the box.

23. Nice work! I love that P-38 (lower right corner)
I think I used to have that very model once. I was a big WWII plane buff for a couple years in my pre-teens and used to assemble those kits. However mine never looked as good as yours do! :hi:

29. I was never this good!
I did love watching my dad work on these though...some of the later P-51s and P-47s he did were very detailed. I'm just glad to be steady enough to restore these - thank you! :hi:

24. W00t!
That's a hell of an air armada.

I can't ID the one at front center, though — not from that angle. Could be an SBD, but I can't tell.

Otherwise, you got you (from left rear) a DeHavilland Mosquito, a North American P-51D Mustang, a Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, a Chance-Vought F4U Corsair and a Lockheed P-38J Lightning.

How'd I do?

25. I think the one in front is an Douglas SBD Dauntless as well.
I've been researching a bit, and that's the one that makes the most sense. It can't be one of the Grummans because those have squared off wingtips.

26. I didn't catch that
But you're right. :toast:

The F4F-3 and -4 and F6F were shorter than that, too, and I think they had oval-shaped air intakes (higher than wide). Plus, they had short cockpit canopies.

31. I could never figure out
how they did so well against the Zero. Sumbitches sure didn't look aerodynamic.

32. Wasn't the Zero after all a delicate assembly?
I seem to recall that although nimble they could not sustain much damage. Certainly not as much as a Corsair.

Or am I on drugs?

34. Not so much the assembly
Zeroes were structurally sound, but they were light — they didn't have much cockpit armor nor self-sealing fuel tanks, because the JNAS didn't want weight to affect performance. But as it was, it was relatively easy to kill the pilot or turn the thing into a cigarette lighter. (The Japanese had a bomber that was so notorious for the latter that the Allies called it "Type One Lighter.")

But first you had to get a good shot at it, and that's the part that doesn't figure — I mean, in the sense that the Hellcat and Wildcat didn't look maneuverable. But that was how Grumman built planes — stocky.

35. I'm still just guessing it's an SBD
Can't really tell from that angle, but I'm pretty sure that's it.

BTW — I've already got an 8th Air Force patch — and a Bombing Ten (VB-10 squadron) patch.
