But then, you folks are free to eat what/where/how you want.

Oh, yeah...that's the trifecta, there.

Please feel free to discuss...

This, btw is a continuance of certain silliness, and not meant as any sort of swipe at any DUer that ate somewhere. I ate at a Burger King when I was in Paris many years ago...so what.

Though I am not a nearby shopkeeper. I hope that's not a deal-breaker...

15. It's their love of Olive Garden and IHOP.
It's not really hate, but disdain for their love of sauces alfredo and pancakes. The Constitution specifically gives me the right to disdain those things. Granted, it's the abridged edition, but still...

16. I would suspect that
you're stereotyping the troops. I'm sure some of them like waffles and/or marinara sauce instead. Possibly waffles WITH marinara sauce.

It's unfair to discriminate against people on the basis of their tastes, however disgusting they might be. ;-)

I'm trying to decide whether feta or bleu cheese would be better for this particular recipe. Possibly a little of both.

And we can't forget the syrup. Vermont syrup, none of that Canadian stuff that slithers across the border.

I have been known to, on occasion, eat a piece of veal. I always feel guilty afterwards, though. Does that absolve me?

The sad thing is that veal isn't even that good, at least not to me. I just eat it from peer pressure. ;-)

20. Well, shoot... if you don't like it...
then why bow to peer pressure? I lived nearby a veal farm years ago... it broke my heart to see those calf heads poking out of those tiny crates, bound by chains around their necks. I could never bear to promote that kind of cruelty. I've had veal once in my life, before I knew what it was. Never again.

22. I'd be looked down on for the rest of my life.
I live with my dad and his girlfriend, and if I refused to eat something she served, she would pitch a fit, causing my unhappiness for about a month while I wait for my passive-agressive father to find some way to get back at me for causing him a slight displeasure.

25. That might just work.
Edited on Mon Jun-19-06 10:19 PM by catbert836
On the other hand, my dad could easily cut off that attempt. Meat is pretty much the main thing in every meal his girlfriend makes (either hamburgers, roast pork or ground beef and Ragu passed off as meat sauce for spaghetti, without exception). There's pretty much not a lot decent to eat here, and any food I might want to actually eat is labelled "too expensive". Although his gourmet swordfish steaks aren't too expensive.

They should change the name of veal to "tortured baby cow". Then no one would buy it.

On edit: I'm off to bed. I've tortured you enough by my public self-sympathy. ;-)

I still think some people would buy it, claiming that cows don't feel pain or suffer anything in those tiny cages. Damn shame.

Don't bow into peer pressure. There is no excuse for eating veal...at all.

I'm not even a militant veggie. I eat fish and I'm relatively fine with carnivores, but no veal.

30. So did I...
Was it near the Arc de Triomphe?

We went there because, quite frankly, we needed to use the ladies, and at the time the only place we felt safe using them were at American fast food places. (we actually got screamed at and chased out of a place where we didn't purchase)We ended up getting a bite there afterwards.

33. Why.....
Why do Vegans\vegetarians etc. always have to make food that is like meat? i.e. Boca Burgers Tofurkey etc. It seems to me if someone is opposed to eating meat. then the thought of ingesting something that resembles meat would bother them.

Just wondering...

I like some of the fake chicken stuff, but that's it. It is handy though for people who are transitioning into the diet or for carnivores who are just trying to eat healthier.

36. Thanks for the reply
I am not a vegetarian, but I have family members who are and I work in IT; so I have a lot of Indian friends. Whenever I have a lunch meeting I always make sure their needs are met. It is amazing to me how many people don't/won't do that in a business setting. I just wondered as I never see them eat any of the fake meat products. Your answer makes sense.

I just wish I could stomach more of the dark greens in the vegetable family without having to hide the flavor with something else. Stir-fry anything and I will eat it. Problem is I travel for a living and lot's of times it is a fast food joint for dinner as I work long long hours and I really don;t have a choice.

Thanks for the reply

Some people are veg or vegan (I'll use the catchall term veg*n to cover both) simple because they do not like the taste of meats and other animal products, or because they disagree with thier digestion or for health reasons. Most veg*ns that I know of, including both the thread originator and myself, are motivated by ethics. We object to the idea that animals are human resources and to the way that they are treated, but not always to the taste of meats, dairy, etc. Mock meats, soy and rice based dairy analogs, etc exist (and have for many centuries at least, some of the most convincing varieties exist in chinese cooking and were created to allow vegetarian buddhist monks to participate in festivals and the consumption of celebratory foods) both to meet that need, to provide a convenient source of plant-based protein and simply as convenience food. They are also useful because they allow recipes to be veganized more easily- it's easier for people to go veg*n when they don't have to completely reimagine thier approach to cooking or when they can adapt thier favorite comfort foods.

Hope that helped to answer your question.

42. I agree with your ethical position...
Animals deserve our stewardship and we should treat even the ones we take as food as best we can. I have family members who are veg*n and we get along just fine. We always have lively discussions around the table about this subject. But we always do it out of respect for each others position and that my choice to eat meat is ok for me and there choice to not eat meat is ok for them. I do agree that they will probably live longer than I; but I am not concerned with health and longevity. Also, my father is 95, in perfect health, eats meat with every meal, smokes 3 packs of Pall Malls every day since he was 16 and hasn't ever exercised or done anything "healthy" that I have ever seen. As a matter of fact most people on both sides of my family live to be 95+ at a minimum. Now my wifes side is just the opposite...they eat healthy, exercises and they both dropped dead before 70. Maybe just genes?

:smoke:

44. Welcome to DU hypocriteslayer
Some veg*ns do refuse to eat faux meats because they too closely resemble the real thing. However others enjoy them because they refuse to eat meat not because they don't like the taste of meat/because it is meat, but because they oppose harming/killing animals. For them the faux meats allow them to have the enjoyment of meat without harming/killing animals.
